should the dipstick tube have an 'o' ring on it between the engine block and tube?

LT1/4 I don't believe there is
A '95 and '96 tube and indicator are different from your originals. If that's a '95 tube you should need an indicator to match.

good to know that the 92-94 doesnt have one - bc I have a 1993 also with that dipstick
For this other car I am working on,
I care about the 95-96 dipstick, as that will be the tube I use.
the dipstick tube i pulled off a 1996 camaro lt1 (which is a different tube than for corvette lt1) had an o-ring on it
Which is what sparked me to create this post.
(i wont be using that dipstick tube, but will be a using a 95-96 corvette dipstick tube that I purchased as used)

It's just a press fit. IIRC service manual says to put lock tight on it. I followed the service manual in the past and it did not leak.

No o-ring. It's press fit. I did used to spread a very tiny amount of "The Right Stuff" around the perimeter of the tube just at the top where it's flared to sit on the block as added leak insurance.
