Default C4 Parking Brake Cables

I’ve been rebuilding my rear suspension for the past few months on my 86 c4 and I got all new components for the parking brake. New pads, springs, nails, and cables. The problem is that I can’t stretch the cables far enough to connect them with the main center cable that runs to the parking brake lever. I can get on wheel of the parking brake attached when it’s loose but then I can’t get the other wheel attached because it’s to tight.

Have you adjusted the splitter where the front cable connects to the right and left?

I cant get that to reach the other cable. The splitter has that threaded end to the cable that screws in, but I can't get that to stretch over to start threading it.

Did you or were you able to verify lengths of all three cables that are new to what was removed?
Also do you have the FSM?

One thing is make sure your parking brake handle has been fully released. Here is the install instructions from the 86 manual.

I only had to replace my left cable as the old cable had started to fray, If I remember I had the right cable unhooked at the splice joint and just started the threads into the splitter then reconnected the right cable.
Did you check that your brake lever was fully released? If there is no tension(cable unhooked) just releasing the handle might not have it fully released and you might have to do it by hand in the car. In drawing 5.13 attached looking at #1 you can see a bolt (guide) that's in a curved slot, this has to be right to the back of the slot.
