Hello,
one question, will a ecm from a ‘91 work on a 88. They are both automatic

No. I believe 90-91 are different than earlier ones. MAP vs MAF based EFI systems among other things.

it does some wierd things. the fan starts with the ignition on, like it is in diagnostic mode. when i put the paperclip in it wont give codes. The car starts but stops after a few seconds. sometimes it will run high on idle but stops if put in gear.

Could be just the internal PROM module rather than the entire ECM.
