I’m looking at buying a 95. Cheap because it supposedly has a rod knock on #8 cylinder. Owner said it was only a slight tapping noise. Is there anything on these lt1s that is a common problem that might actually make the owner think it’s a rod knock but actually isn’t? I don’t know how mechanically inclined he is. I know exhaust doughnuts were problems on the trucks and I was just hoping I could get lucky and it’s just something stupid and I can drive it awhile before rebuilding. Thank you
If it’s only a tick, could be something in the valve train. But… if the man says it’s a rod knock, by all means let it be a rod knock with metal potato chips in the pan. Use it to negotiate and bring er on home. Get it for a price considering it is a rod bearing
I’m definitely going with the rod knock. That’s why im on here asking questions instead of owner because I don’t want him to start thinking it might be something else. I was looking for a running driving project but this car is super clean for a great price. I had hope maybe these cars had a exhaust gaskets issues or something similar.
Back in the day I would look for cool cars that needed a Eng. refresh, rod knock burnt valve trans Etc., people didn't know or want to deal with it so sure I'll take it cheap. I would be looking forward to rebuilding the motor parts were cheap back in the day , had the knowledge it was O-boy I get the work on a 440 motor or whatever if the car was worth the trouble so if you think it's worth it and have the knowledge or the money go old school and do it , how does it look on paper ,buying a new motor having someone build it for ya not cheap doing it yourself cheaper and ya can say : look what did ,if it runs ,sometimes not LOL
It could very well be a manifold leak but that’s not really a super common issue with them. I would rather have a clean car with nice paint than a runner that needs a full on paint job. Much cheaper and easier to DIY. Looking forward to seeing it. I hope you get it.
