The VIN is correct for an '89 'vert/roadster - the 'check digit' 2 (ninth digit) which validates all of the others is correct so I doubt your claimed undocumented.
Here's a GM VIN Card for 1989 that you can actually decipher all but the 'ninth' digit of a GM VIN. The ninth is a 'check digit' that uses a numerical algorithm of the others to validate it.
The factory manual lists 3, for convertible, which I thought would be listed as 03 (as is 07 or 02 for non-convertible).
Instead, there is 31, just before the engine code. That's where my confusion came from.
Body types in the factory manual are listed as [07 Coupe, 2-door hatchback], [02 Coupe 2-door hatchback], [67 Coupe 2-door Convertible], and [3 Coupe, 2-door Convertible]. I didn't know where the 1 came from, and am still not sure.
Not a big deal. I was just curious.

The '89 VIN Card I posted explains it very clearly if you check the explanation for 6th digit. You'll see explanations of 07, 67 and all of the other GM body types.
Ahhh. I see. There is confusion in the factory manual notes about body types, making it look like body types were two-digit, when it's actually a 1-digit code.
