Default Question for Automatic Owners

How hard does your car creep forward at an idle?

I have a 110% stock 1995 auto and this car creeps forward unlike any other auto I've driven. It idles at 600 with AC off and a little higher with AC on.

This isn't an issue, its just surprising and I'd like to know how other C4's act.
I live in the mountains and I have yet to encounter a hill/stop light this car can't idle up.

Has the transmission been changed or rebuilt? Sounds like too low of a stall speed on the converter.

You sure it is idling at "600"?

I agree on the converter stall.

Transmission is untouched that I know of. No witness marks under there. Not in it's maintenance records either.

I can still load it up to 2000 1500 rpm.

Mine is only 100% stock but it doesn't creep at idle at all. Does it sound like it is idling at 600 RPM? How are your brakes?

I had no idea I could check it with my HVAC display. I'll be doing that shortly.

Brakes are spot on.

I was running a factory Corvette converter in the 700R4 in my Camaro for a long while. I remember it wanted to creep forward (albeit I was idling around 650 rpm). I'd have to hold the brake a bit firmly to keep it from wanting to creep forward. The Miniram intake didn't like to idle lower than that, as it would start idling rough.

I also couldn't stall it any higher than about 1700-1800 rpm...

But when I changed to my current 2500 rpm converter, that completely went away.

Warm idle in gear is 575-625 according to hvac

Also my converter stall is closer 1500 rpm.

Does your car have the G92 Optional Axle Ratio?

Mine does want to creep. I have an occasional idle surge that makes it worse around 700rpm. Normal is about 600 for it and creeps a smidge there too.

I want to say mine will move at 5mph or so just on creep, but on the one hill up to work every day its just strong enough to pull it very slightly upward - I still need gas to actually get up and over.

Mine will gain enough speed at idle to shift into second.

Mine creeps big time. Tach shows idling at about 500, creep indicates higher unless its a stall speed issue. As far as I know trans never been touched said PO of 24 years (female Dr.). Randy

How interesting - not to beat a dead horse, but I was out earlier and wanted to see how fast I could get on creep : 18mph! And I do believe it also shifted into second.

Sounds pretty normal for these cars. Good to know!

I wonder how the 700R4 cars act.
