Default Tires?

I have to replace my tires. Currently have Kuhmo 285/40r17s. Can't seem to find that size in an all season tire. Plenty of tires in the 275 size but would prefer to keep the same size. Anyone?

If you want to keep that size you got 2 choices nitto or continental extreme contact.
And i know conti are summer only, i believe the nittos are as well.

275 40 17 is the OEM size, why would you want to go with a slightly incorrect size?

285/40ZR17 has been the factory rear tire size on (non-ZR-1) C4's since 1993.

You can add the Pirelli PZero System tires to the 285 tires available for the C4, but they are a bit pricey.

I went with 285's also.

I still have a set of never mounted Continental 285/40/17 extreme contact tires. Willing to sell cheap.(now sold)

If anyone is interested shoot me a PM.

Not on all of them!

That is the factory size on the '96 I had.
285/40-17 on 9.5" rims Rear
255/45-17 on 8.5" rims Front

Very few options for that 285/40-17 size these days though

I always forget not everyone is on 275 square.

If you're not, you should be, lol. Gets rid.of some under steer.

Yep, the Nittos and Contis in 285 are summer tires. I drive mine all year so I need all seasons. No other 285s except $Michelins$. 285 was stock for my"93. Have aftermarket wheels that are all 9.5". Looks like I'm going to 275s.
Gets rid of some under steer.
That maybe a nice improvement.

The other thing is that the 93-96 "non square" also has 8-1/2" front and 9-1/2" rear, wheels. 245 to 275 Front and 285 to 275 rear is moving towards Oversteer. Going to 275 but the rears being on a wider wheel, you won't go 'as far' towards oversteer as you would if the front wheels were also 9-1/2".

Unless you drive the car in anger fairly frequently, I don't think you'll detect a difference. You may notice a slight increase in wandering on grooved pavement, which is what the reduction in front tire width for 93 addressed. The narrower front wheel and wider rear tire were to rebalance the car with the reduction in front tire width.

All the 88-96 C4s with Z51 or Z07 handling packages had 17x9.5 wheels with 275/40/17 square fitments. But as IHBD mentions, the 93+ cars with 285 and 255 tires had narrower front wheels. Don't fit 275s on those 8.5" wheels. Instead, if you have those front wheels, go with 275/40/17 rears and 245/45/17 fronts. If you have 17x9.5 front and rear, then by all means fit 275/40/17 front and rear.
