In general with cars, the newest of the model is the best, they worked out a lot of bugs over the years with the C4.
The ZF6 with the Dana 44 is very robust, and of course the 350 SBC is very reliable. My 95 has been a great car, owned since early 96. Have never had a driveline issue, only ancillary items like water pumps, headlight gears, brake booster, starter, shocks, etc., things that will wear out with any year.
Everyone will cry Optispark with the LT1's, I have only had mine replaced once with over 140K miles, and it happened at around 20-30K miles. Looking back, I think it may have just been the coil, but I was ignorant about the car and car repair in general then, and pre-Corvette Forum (1998). The Chevy dealer replaced opti, coil, wires, plugs....so they just threw everything at it, and invoice said "cracked coil", so I bet that was the only problem. The 95 also has the vented opti, so I'm sure that helps. I daily drove mine for years, through all kinds of weather.
If I was going to get one now, I would get an LT4, not counting a ZR1, B2K, etc. If I could have any, regardless of maintenance, I would take The Sledgehammer.

Well to each their but I own a 96 LT4 and the motor is a beast and coupled with the 6 speed manual transmission the car is a lot of fun!

I purchased an 86 in 1990 and it was the worst Corvette I ever had. Numerous mechanical issues and the clear coat started to fade. I then purchased a 94 in 1997 and it was far superior is every way from the 86. I currently have a 96 LT4 convertible. I believe any model year will be ok as long as it's been maintained and properly repaired but I lean towards the later C4 years. I also believe any car that 30 plus years old is going to have some reliability issues. They were never built or designed to last this long.

There IS no right year. Every Corvette brings a unique and thrilling experience. I've had 5. Currently an 86 Vette. It has side pipes with painted fiberglass covers, ZR1 tires and rims and lowered 1 inch with 4+3 Nash. It's totally different than the 76 and 78 I had. It's tighter, jittery but handles like on rails. The cockpit view is much better in the C3. Now, my 71 LT1 was a different cat as well. New Vettes offer more push, more quiet, easier on long trips. I think the earlier c4 Vettes off more of a race car feel as they require more driver input. I'm 60 and enjoy older cars. I enjoy the old school experience more than the sophisticated ride. So, if ur a refined person, get a newer c4. I might even let my 86 go and go back to a mild build 74-82. I don't need fast. I just want to revisit my high school years, take the t tops off, jam to Nazareth and cruise the beach. But any Vette will brighten ur life experience. You'll have no regrets. Most people will never have an opportunity to have a Vette. I'm not a wealthy person, never spent over $8000 on a Vette. To me, they are Ferraris. No matter what u get....your gonna smile so big your head might split.

Personally, I feel the 95 and 96 are the best. My 95 is a manual, which to me, raises the driving enjoyment incredibly. 95 and 96 both have vented Optisparks, which increases the reliability significantly. The 96 LT4 is arguably the best from a power perspective, but the OBDII is more difficult to tune than the 95’s OBDI system (so I’ve been told). ZR1s are of course the pinnacle, but out of many folks price range. Anyway, those are my thoughts… Also, if going with a manual, I highly recommend getting the ZF-Doc short shifter. A game changer!
