Default Troubleshooting

Hello everyone! I have a 1991 c4 corvette that I recently fixed the floppy turn signal problem and rebuilt the steering column. Post rebuild I have the following issues.
  1. My brights are stuck on and do not turn off. When I pull the lever there is no click and it just flops the opposite way. Did I miss something in the rebuild?
  2. My left turn signals blink, but my right just turns on. The light on the dash doesn’t even turn on.
  3. When I pulled the cables through the dash to remove the windshield wiper actuator I pulled the connector end off. I put them back where I believed they were supposed to go, but I couldn’t find a wiring diagram. Anyone have one? I also notice that the wires are hot behind the wiper switch.
  4. Due to this, my windshield wipers do not work, but fluid shoots through. I haven’t tried my cruise control yet but I will when I go for a drive.
  5. I get in and turn the key and I have a no start...something in wiring or something in the steering column?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to get to a track day on October 11th!

Hi your high beam switch is under the dash at steering column near the ignition switch where all the wiring connects, there is a "rod" that fits in the high low beam switch under dash which goes up alongside and into the column where the high low beam wiper combo assembly is.

When removing the access cover you can access the rod and high low beam plastic slider that pushes on that rod, to operate that high low beam switch on column under dash. See the images below from my manual and some screenshots that show that rod and black plastic thing that slides from high low indicator stalk operation. Its a pain in the *** to fit together there is a slot in the cover below access panel that holds it all together, that rod can easily dislocate from switch under dash so keep an eye on that when assembling it.
See screenshot of rod the black plastic slider needs to press against, its a fiddly job to align and assemble it correctly. You need to lower the column to remove the access cover in front of turn signal / wiper assembly, then remove the black plastic cover to access the black plastic slide assembly that connects the indicator / high beam stalk to that rod that goes to high beam switch under dash on column near the main switch connector. That main switch also has a rod that actuates it from ignition switch, it can be adjusted up and down to operate starter etc ... Good luck 🙂👍

Thanks for the reply!

I was able to get into the dash, and found the rod that needs to go int the ignition switch. While having someone else hold the rod down, I tried to turn the key to see if it would start. Lo and behold, it did not. Still same problem as before with no crank.

After doing a little research, would it be possible that I somehow triggered the VATS system with having the steering column apart? When I go to turn the key there is no click behind the dash.

I as well pulled the wires going to that ignition switch under the dash and there is no power going into it.

Hi sorry for the late reply, have attached some wiring diagrams for you, page 1 has battery and fusible links diagram also the continued page 2 has more fusible links diagram and then page 3 has the ignition switch on steering column under dash wiring diagram.
Hope it helps you locate where the power supply to ignition switch has been lost,

Also attached is info how to check the CCM module for codes when you have power to dash from ignition switch, should your Vats be stopping you starting the car.

Cheers Gerard
