Default Transmission Dipstick Specs Help

I recently picked up a 1989 for my daughter. I took it to a shop for a trans leak and they told me the dipstick was after market and too short ( which appears to be true). They indicated overfilling likely caused the leak..which made sense. They told me they used a dipstick from a 1998 Silverado truck with same trans, and it was now leveled correctly and was good to go. I ordered a 1989 dipstick from ebay..with a three week wait. My daughter drove the Vette for about 7 days at which time it died on the road, appearing to be stuck in 1st/2cd gear, Towed to a trans shop, who said 3rd burnt out due to low trans fluid. I confronted the first shop. They swear the dipstick was correct. I am having trouble getting specs for the dipsticks to confirm. Chevy says the Silverado stick is 33.38”, but cant tell me if that includes the handle. They have zero data on the vette dipstick. My searches indicate its about 24”. I am pretty sure they under filled substantially, and I now refer to this as the $4,000 dipstick.. Does anyone have a resource to get the specs for these dipsticks?

Thanks much.

The length of the dipstick is totally irrelevant - so long as it is accompanied by its designed tube. If the shop used a dipstick from a truck, then they had to also use the tube in order to be correct. If the tube in your Vette is shorter than the truck tube, then the truck dipstick will go farther down, falsely indicating an overfill condition.

I know on my 96 there is a metal bracket inside the trans to stop the dipstick from going too far. I had a picture but I can't find it. If the dipstick was too long it would hit this stop bracket. You could maybe force it past but it would feel wrong. Dan

^^^^^^^^^^^^ My new 2025 Ranger has a massive touchscreen for controls. I just checked my 2012 Escape and can't understand why it doesn't have one.

Just for the record I did not claim that an 89 also had this stop. I really don't know. Do you? Dan

Arbee, I went through Saskatoon on my Honda CB750 in 1974 when I rode all across Canada and down the West coast. Four month trip/ride. I loved it. Dan

I did wonder how anyone could use a dipstick 7-8” too long. I assumed it would stop before seated, but maybe not.

Thanks for the input.

I sure do. Research! Investigation always comes in handy. There is a world of information out there just itching to be plucked by inquiring minds.

In 1974 it was a great place. 2026, my city and the rest of Canada is like a banana. Getting browner and browner by the day. Unfettered immigration causing inflated housing prices due to short supply. Homelessness for the same reason. Rise in property crime from desperate people. Proliferation of drugs by those who have given up. Coffee shops filled from wall to wall, morning to night with immigrants lounging around. Not working, not contributing. All on my tax money while the young working families struggle to meet expenses.

I understand your frustration. So many people today are content living on the backs of others. Government support has gone way too far. Here in the U.S., before the "New Deal" set up in the early 1930's, if someone didn't work, they had to steal, or sleep outside and go without food, or depend on friends and family. Now with social security and medicare and Snap [food stamps]and all the other welfare programs, those who choose to do nothing can survive, maybe even thrive, even though they are takers, not contributors. It amazes me that this seems to be able to go on and on. I wasn't aware Canada had like difficulty. Harder to be an ordinary fellow in 2026.

Only if you 'Muricans promise to get rid of AOC, Crockett, Omar etc. So far, we haven't reached the point of electing a communist to lead one of our major cities.

I agree!!! I could add a few names to that. I am from Iowa in the giant red area of the map. I am just surprised these clowns can actually get adults to vote for them. You handled that "bait" question better than I expected. Dan
