When I bought my '92 base back in November the interior lights would not come on when opening the driver's side door. After investigating I discovered the barrel part of the sensor was missing and only the outer ring was still attached, like the picture below:
I replaced the sensor and for the past two months it has worked, until yesterday. When I shut the door I heard something rattle on the inside and when I opened the door I discovered that the replacement sensor had also broken and is now inside the door. Are these just crappy replacements? The button it hits on the door jamb is not protruding and I can't see how to adjust the plunger or the sensor further away from the door jamb to prevent it from being pushed into the door again. There are pages of Google results of posts about these door ajar sensors but I found only one post describing this same problem. That post was back in 2005 and no one responded to it.
The replacement door switches are pretty much junk for the most part. They fall apart. And all of the vendors are selling the stock from the same manufacturers so far as I've been able to tell.
I'm still peeved off pretty good every time I'm reminded about buying these specific switches and then having them fall apart only to be sent replacements which also fall apart. And they only replace em once. After that, it's a monetary loss on your part. And you;re left wit hthe same problem you started out with in the first place on top of it all.
Doesn't seem like there's much interest on the part of the vendors in reaching out to their suppliers and resolving the matter. Take the money for the garbage and run seems to be the dominant model of business.
I bought a set of modified later model GM door switches from a seller called zr1-dan on ebay. I replaced all 3 of them in my 85 and they have worked flawlessly for years. Sadly it doesn't seem like he sells them anymore.
