Default Impossible to answer question

I have a 95 corvette lt1, I'm in the process of changing the fuel pump to a race pump. The pump has been changed before and the inlet screen or sock was facing left to right. I'm thinking it should fit in the trough in the tank going front to back. I've looked at other posts about this, and 50% say its one way and 50 % say its the other way. I'm just looking for the ABSOLUTE CORRECT WAY to install the sock. I only want to do the job once. Never thought such a simple thing could be so hard to find out. I have books but none show it or talk about how to install it. I'm leaning towards front to rear. If you have really put one on without problems, let me know which way it went on. Thanks, and let the guesses begin. 😄 🤣 😂 😆

I think mine i did sideways. Frankly, I don't think it matters at all as long as it's on and in the "valley".

I often think about replacing it with one of those fuel bladder type socks, they're designed to always keep a flow of fuel inside the bladders by virtue of having more surface area, which should help prevent fuel starvation when cornering.

So, after doing a major suspension rebuild and needing to take the my '94 LT1 to our wonderful dealership for alignment, I'd previously purchased a strainer i intended to install before i took the car in for alignment, but i got a case of "f'its, I'm done," and decided i would have them replace the fuel pump strainer instead. During my conversation with the mechanic after he'd installed the new strainer, he showed me the old strainer that had been installed "sideways" or at right angles to the trough it is supposed to fit into. Subsequently the strainer was miserably wadded up. The mechanic told me the strainer fits lengthwise INTO the trough, not at right angles with the trough. Not sure if my reply answers the question you're asking, my intent is only to be helpful.

I’d go length wise but as long as it’s in the trough it really shouldn’t matter.

That's what I'm thinking but I want to make sure, the one i took off was left to right and was ripped and bent.

I have always installed the strainer lengthwise. It fits perfectly into the anti splash cup that's in the bottom of the tank. I can't see the fuel pump/sender assembly fitting in properly if it were installed any other way.

I'm going to put it in front to back so it sits in the trough. Thanks for the replies. Was hoping to see it in gm writing but I can't waste any more time.
