Well, I'm making my first 4+ hour treck to go look at a C4 so I can finally get you guys to wave at me. I ran the carfax and came up with the dreaded odometer roll back warning. The car(87) is currently reported as having 95,000 miles. The reported mileage from 96-97 dropped 6,000 miles, 44,000 down to 38,000. How worried should I be about this? Should I just use this as a way to beat the dealer down on price? The mileage would now be over 100g. Thanks for the input.
That happened to mine and I have owned it for 8 yrs, idiots just do not know how to type :banghead: :banghead: Mine has a dreaded carfax record now :hurray: :hurray: for me....

Re: Odometer Roll back question (pjp13)
Something I never thought about till my last inspection: Make sure your Eng/Met button is on Eng. When I got in to check the hazards I noticed my vette had over 100,000 miles. I’m like WTF I know that’s not correct, about a split second latter I thought Eng/Met button.
Thanks guys. If I like the car I'm still going to try and use it to beat them down on price. The mileage pattern seems to go back tonormal the next year
Well thanks to the wonderful winter weather we are having in April, I am waiting one more day to test drive the car in question. First drive in a vette and a fresh fallen inch of white stuff just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. And weather channel said it was going to be good today too. :banghead:

According to my page 2c-2 of my 1987 owner's manuel,
"For your protection the odometer of this car is designed with tamper-resistant features to indicate tampering. If silver lines appear vertically between odometer numerals, it is likely that the odometer has been turned back or reversed. The mileage shown may not be actual".

84-89 Digital Dash C4's are easy to disconnect the odometer and with a little figuiring out can turn the odometer back. I am not going to tell you how but don't believe that ...
I can believe that.I bought my 86 with 98,000 miles and no silver lines on the odometer. Got a free carfax awhile ago which showed 65,000 mile difference from california to registering in canada. Nothing is for sure but death and taxes!!!!!
I think the digital odometer is controlled by the CCM (body computer). When the CCM has to be replaced, the dealer has to flash the mileage into it using special equipment and I think it can only be done in 6 mile increments. From what I have heard, the numbers can only go forward, so if a dealer plugs in a higher number than what it should be, that's it.
I know of a car that had the mileage reported on a title transaction to be 62,950 miles, then 4 months later a stealership reported the mileage as 39,682 when they transacted the title. The difference of 23,268 miles can hardly be considered a typo in that cars case, at least I wouldn't see how.
