Weird Stuff
I've got two intermittent problems with my '90 C4 A4.
First, I have intermittent failure to be able to engage reverse gear (automatic tranny). It's like it isn't there. The key word is intermittent. When the problem doesn't occur, there is zero evidence of slippage. Up until yesterday, this problem had appeared once last weekend since I got the car four weeks ago. Yesterday, it happened a lot. I autoxed the car yesterday.
Secondly, the emergency brake light comes on when the emergency brake is not being used. This occurs for a few moments, and when I drive off, the brake light goes out not to appear again. This occurs when I start the engine. Simaltaneous to this phenomena, the power windows don't work, the stereo doesn't work, the clock radio is blank, the temperature display is blank, and probably some other power items.
What gives? Any ideas?

My emergency brake light stays on sometimes.....until I push it really hard...then the light goe's off....I can live with it......
Have you tried to push on it after disengaged????
Try it and let me know...
thanks

I sort of had the same problem with my 81. After braking really hard I would push the gas and the car would not move. My mechanic checked it out and found the problem to be low oil in the tranny.
Check your oil.

This problem does not occur after using the emergency brake. The problem arises when I start the engine. I am not engaging the emergency brake. The problem is intermittent. The same thing is true of the reverse gear issue. That problem has not occurred in three days. I back out of my garage each morning. No transmission slippage at all.

Sounds like a ground problem. Not at the battery but at the ECM where all the wires ground. I believe that mine all ground to the tranny bellhousing. Did you get any kind of history as to what work had been done on the car before you bought it?

That makes sense. I have a problem with the Air Bag light as well, and Dick Guldstrand told me that all of that electrical stuff grounds to the transmission bellhousing area. Actually, I will be seeing Dick tonight.

Re: Weird Stuff (NBM LS1 M6)
BTW, neither problem has re-occurred in the past five days. That is one of the reasons it is weird and no doubt a problem with the grounding of electronic/electrical stuff.
