Well, I found one thing I don't like about the GS - the keyless entry! :cuss So, I turned it off following the instructions in the manual, and now the key fob unlock doesn't work - you can hear it trying to do something, but now the only way to unlock the car is with the key. Am I doing something wrong here
I love it wxcept for if I am standing near the car if I am working, washing or standing by it I put the keys on the floor. Problem solved! I love it in the rain with hands full it unlocks for me. My .02 There is a way to set it but I don't remember how.
I'll have to try mine but I thought you should allways be able to unlock the doors whether armed or not. I have mine on most of the time so I'm not sure. Just have to turn it off when hanging around the car.
give it time... you'll get used to it. As for the modes of operation, check the Helms shop manuals... they should be of help. I would look it up but I am at work
I have had mine for 6-8 months and I still don't like it. I am trying to figure out the advantage to PKE. Is it supposed to make Corvette owners look cool because we don't have to push a button to unlock the car? How stupid do we look shaking the stupid fob if it doesn't unlock right away? I just see no use for this at all...wish I had AKE...active keyless entry.
Jeff
When you hit the unlock button, what you're hearing is the passenger door unlock. The unlock button on the fob will not unlock the driver's door (go figure).

Mine does, now :D PKE is a Piece of Krap Engineering.
You can set the PKE so it unlocks only the drivers door, neither door or both doors. What ever you want it to do. Works great for me. Maybe if the battery has'nt been changed since 96 you could use a new one and solve your problem.

Just to clarify, the "passive" function of the key fob (walk up, walk away) can be set to unlock driver's or both (PKE enabled), or neither (PKE disabled). But the actual button on the key fob cannot be configured at all. Regardless of mode, it only unlocks the passenger door.
I suspect there is nothing wrong with the poster's remote (she said she turned off PKE), but she is just experiencing firsthand the shortfalls of the PKE system :D
Page 2-6 in the Owners Manual - Changing the door settings
1. Put the key in the ignition, but don't turn it on
2. Press DOOR on the transmitter until the door locks cycle (about 2 secs)
I'll give that a shot. I was doing as you said, but not with the key in the ignition or "immediately" after removing the key from the ignition (if that even makes a difference  ). I just stand by the car, hit the door button on the fob for 2 seconds and it disables/enables the PKE.
PKE works fine. As stated above, disabled I can unlock the door with the key, not with the fob. So why bother having a fob? Anyway, I'll probably just turn the PKE back on and live with it. :smash:
GoodbyeGirl, I have mine set so when I come near the car only the driver door unlocks. If I want the passenger door to unlock I hit the door button on the fob. You can set it so both doors open when you come near the car if you have a passenger all the time.
Page 2-13- Universal Theft Deterrent System, Says the system won't arm if you lock the doors with a key or manual door lock, or if you lock the car after the doors are closed.
