The code 42 is a malfunctioning ESC module. If you have a GM service manual for your 86, you can read through the diagnostics associated with the code 42, because there are a couple of possible causes. However, the most common cause is a burned up ESC module. They're pretty cheap to replace. Can't remember what mine cost, but it was under $20. Take the distributor cap off, remove the rotor, and the module is right there. There are instructions in the box for the new module to tell you how to replace it.
