their radar detector? I have both a Passport and an Escort about 10yrs old...I know I need a new detector but both are like new. Anyway, I will probably mount it on the visor. Is it necessary for me to take off the plastic moulding that runs from left to right at the top of the windshield to do this neatly? I only looked at it briefly tonight and it does not seem like their is any space where the glass meets the frame of the windshield.
The new Passport is like $329 but they will give $50 rebate on turnin of the old unit. Does'nt seem worth it to me... :flag
It seems today with the Instant On RADAR that a RADAR detector is about useless if you are on the road alone, or first in line. That's probably why I won't even buy one.

I had one and for this reason I sold it...
You might want to check ebay, dealers are selling units below retail all the time... Also, 1 of the supporting vendors (Tuan Le?) was selling units below MSRP also.
That's why instead of a radar detector, you get a radar jammer, AKA FM Frequency Tester. Most of the trucking publications advertise them, and from what I've heard, they work really well. They are about the same price as a good radar detector. There is also an aparatus made that is supposed to absorb radar, in essence, putting you in stealth mode. Haven't heard much feedback on that one though. One thing is for certain, and that is nothing can outwit laser, although unlike radar, there is no such thing as moving laser, and laser is 100% accurate because it is aimed, so now you're back to a laser detector. What all this boils down to is that it's a vicious circle. Law enforcement and the general public are continually trying to outwit each other. Radar detectors are banned nationwide in commercial vehicles ie: eighteen wheelers. Some states don't allow radar detectors in ANY vehicle, and therefore, most states have several State Tooper cars equipped with Radar Detector Detectors, and believe me guys, they work :cuss
Isn't it ironic that the same company that developed traffic enforcement radar ( Cincinatti Microwave) also developed the radar detector.
Be careful out there, and don't drive any faster than your guardian angel can fly! :auto:
I made a bracket that slips over the dash lip just over the stereo in the center of the car, the wires run down to the "bread loaf" and go back into the dash, can email pics if you like.
Right below the mirror. I have it wired to a mini fuse in the mirror using the map light power. Around here they run their radar all the time so even if i'm not being stupid i know when their close. :D
Ecklers or Mid America sells a mounting bracket for detectors that mounts to the mirror. I have not seen one in person but they look cool in the catalog picture. :seeya
I actually velcro mine to the top of the dash on the left side of the steering wheel. Higher would be better, but then it would be obvious to the police, and they are illegal to use here. It is not noticable unless a cop actually tries to pass me going the same direction.
I have a second piece of velcro on the shelf in front of the left vent to lower the detector to when in "company"
I have a wire run through the dash that comes up on the left side of the dash that drops down loose to the door speaker panel when not in use.
I did some tests with my Bel detector and one of those "You are Going XXX" Signs, at the top of the windshield, I get about 10% more notice than on the dash, but below the dash, I get about 40% less notice and of course, Lidar reception would be useless (but they don't use it much here 'cause no one uses radar detectors - they're illegal. :D )
While the thread is about where we mount, I'll chime in on usefulness of detectors; they are just one tool in a whole bag of tricks to keep your clean license. Used with other techniques, they've saved my butt a few times.
i have not had 1 ticket since i got rid of my radar detector. when i had one it seemed like i got one every few months and i was always worried about how many points i had left before they took my licence. now i just stay alert and speed when its safe to.
