Default License Plate Sizes ?

I have a brass license plate frame from Ecklers on the rear and need a similar frame for the front of my 88. I tried the frame in the front and it doesn’t quite fit – is the front a different size to the rear ? I don’t know anything about US sized plates.

BTW to make the right size I scanned my plate, photochopped it and printed on glossy laminated paper – it still looks embossed !

I believe it is a different size. I tried it once with a standard size frame & it didn't fit. I think the front was made for the plate only. :flag

Thanks 91 vetteboy, I wonder why they make the front and back different ?

My frame is almost too big for the rear, I enlarged the holes so that I could shift the reversing lights out, still not quite enough room.

Any suggestions anyone ?

No room on my 87 for a plate frame in the rear. I just use a thick plastic plate cover with some nice chrome screw covers.

I ran out to the garage, measured the front & it is just a little smaller than the rear.

GM made it smaller to make it look like a frame within itself surrounding the plate. Strange concept , oh well. :flag

That’s a pity because the gold (brass) frame looked really good there – I guess it would soon get stone chips though.
