Hey I hope you guys and gals don't mind that I will be hanging around Corvette-less for a bit soaking in the knowledge! I just finished restoring a 1987 Buick Regal Turbo T and am starting to think about my next car.
What are the pros/cons to owning a convertible? How about the years of C4 production... are any more desireable than others? How many engine variations are there? What are the most common problems your cars experience?
All the C4 Corvettes had SBC engines, starting with the L83 in '84, L98, LT1, LT4, LT5 to finish out the C4s in '96.
Well, I like the late L98 power plant which includes '88-'91.
The pro of owning a Corvette is that it is a Corvette; the cons are related to higher parts prices.
If you are considering a Corvette for your garage I suggest you pick up a copy of the "Corvette Black Book" to see options and feature changes through the years.
Welcome. Lots of great deals on the C4 can be had right now. Since winter is coming, you will notice the prices will fall even more than they are now. Couple that with a buyer's market and it's the best time to buy.
Convertibles are awesome, downside is the cost of admission is higher than the coupe but they are easier to resell.
As the others have said, buy the newest you can afford. Most on this forum see the 1996 as the best C4, I would tend to agree. You can find a 96 coupe with average miles for under $15,000 if you look. :auto:

Re: Hello! (87TurboT)
Welcome aboard. :seeya I would sugust that you get a 90 or newer so that you get the 'new' interior. Also after 91 with the LT1 engine you no longer have a distributer, you get the Optispark unit.
Start with ZR1 90-95(LT5) If you can't afford ,look at a fourm member's 1990. I think it's( Jay 383) well cared for (by the look's) and ALL paperwork.(listed at E-bay). It's really up to you but start at the most you can afford. If you want the best bang for the buck find a clone 96LT4, or a model LT4,LT1.All corvette's are "the best bang for the buck" but what look do you want?or how much cash you have?I would start looking in this fourm first. :seeya
It's been said many times before on here...buy the newest you can afford.
Honestly the differences between and early C4 and a '96 LT4 Vette are like night and day.
The market is very soft on C4's right now so prices are way down....it's a good time to buy.
Another C4 snob? Just the other day there was a post complaining about how older generation Vette owners (C2 and C3) looked down on C4's and now even C4 owners apparently have a pecking order. Go figure.
That isn't a snob remark. The performance changes over the evolution of the car. They all look good - but the performance of the stock cars gets better as they are newer. Look at the change to the C5! To say that the stock performance is the same as an 84 is ridiculous.
All of these cars can be modified to perform better than stock - but that's not the question. Just because a newer one may perform better doesn't mean you cant love yours just as much.
