Vette or airplane?
I've found the best bang-for-buck on the market for low aquisition cost and low ownership cost that can haul pilot + 2 to be Piper Cherokee 140 with the 160hp STC (high comp cyls, restricted to 100LL only). That's what I had. Would haul me + two 200lber's and 36gal (fuel to the tabs) on midwest summer days and still climb @ 500fpm. Some here familiar w/ Cherokee 140's may call bs on that but she did it (Metco wingtips helped). Had a 58" pitch on prop though so cruise was no better than 107 kts summertime. There are a lot of mods for the Hershey bar wing style Cherokees that can wake them up (Art Mattson VG's, Powerflow exhaust header, etc.)

Or you can kit build one if you choose.
If I didn't need to bring the boy along I'd have one of these.
If you do the airplane look at experiementals. They are the only way an average person can afford an airplane. You don't have all the airworthiness directives you have to follow and most importantly you don't have product liability. If you do a experimental be careful who built it. Also, make sure you can deal it where you can get a limited airpframe and powerplant license to work on it yourself or you're back to paying the price of a regular airplane. Also experimentals have a lot newer technology. The piper is still using Bendix Magnetos that are 60-70 year old tech.
