I leave it in "D", or 3rd, under 50mph, and have 3.73 gears. It's a rush!

I use D most of the time, OD when I get out on the road and know I'll be over 50 for a while. The car is definitely more responsive in D. I shift through the gears occasionally but certainly not all the time.

If you shift the gears, why did you get an A4?
I think that a car with OD should be kept in OD. Correct me if I am wrong but if you keep the car in 3 the tranny just will not go into OD but will shift through the gears as it would if you had it in OD.
What I am trying to say is that when you put the car in a gear 2-3 or OD the only thing that the tranny does is that it will not shift to that gear.
If you want to shift gears get a M6 like I did.

No there are differences to leaving it in "D" that provide more responsiveness. Plus the main thing is when you have an A4 in a vette it will shift from 3-4 all the time driving around town. When these tranny burn out it is usuallty the 3-4 clutch pack. You take that out of the equation when you leave it in "D" if you have an auto, do your tranny a favor and keep it in D for around town driving up to 50 or so and then just pop it into od at that point. You will get better performance and more importantly extend the life of your transmission.

Around town, gentle driving, I leave it in OD. (1988)

I love the way it slides into overdrive at exactly 61 kilometres per hour and the revs drop to 1000rpm. Our speed limit is 60kph and it's really annoying when the traffic stream sticks to 57 or 59 kph. Oh well, I try to forgive them cos - I'm driving a Corvette, most anything else is only a shopping car...(insert insane cackle here)

Coming home and starting to go uphill at 60kpg ( about 35MPH ?) I usually drop it into 3rd, it sounds happier.

I only recently heard that the 3-4 clutch often goes first - is that true ? I'm coming up to 100,000 miles - should I get the trans serviced ? should i replace with synthetic oil ?

I think flushing the tranny fluid every 18 months or so is cheap insurance, thats what i do anyway.

:iagree:

When my trans was re-built the builder made it so the OD doesn't come in til 60mph. Even when I ran with the stock trans/converter/2.59 gears, I kept it in D until I knew I was going to be doing over 50mph for a while. I only row through the gears if I want to control wheel spin. If I try to back pedal it in 1st after 12 mph with the shifter in the 2-OD positions the trans will shift into 2nd.

I usually leave the car in 3rd around town or on roads where speed limits are 45-50 depending on terrain. There are some roads around here with hills and curves and the car performs much better in 3rd gear. I'll shift into OD once speeds get above 50 on straight streches and on the freeway.
:iagree:

If I keep it in OD around town I have my foot on the brake 60% of the time due to the hills.

Mine stays in D until I get over 50-55 for any length of time. It feels like the motor is lugging and response is very poor if I'm in OD below 45mph. It also seems to shift into OD way to fast for my tastes. I believe I have 3.07's in the rear...

So that I don't have to push in a clutch every time I shift it.

"D" around town. "OD" on the highway. "D" at the track letting the trans do the shifting.

In the city I drive my vette in 3rd gear. Hardly ever go into 4th gear. At least on the city streets.
Is that OK?
thanks

I'm glad this came up. I leave my car in D period. From 0 to 130 it's always in D. I don't speed much though. If you're not too concerned about gas milage, am I doing any damage? I'm putting in Richmond 3.75 gears next week so my outlook will change I'm sure. :seeya

I dont believe that is true... In fact, Ive been told just the opposite. And that is why the GM tells you to drive in "OD" and not "D".

However, that is not what I do.
