Hi my 1985 is over heating its running about 220-240 with the thermostat in
and 175 - 210 without the thermostat what should the temp be with and without the thermostat please help
there are a number of things u should check. First, go to tech tips and follow the procedure for cleaning out all the junk between the radiator and the a/c condenser....simple thing if you have ever turned a wrench before...but it will take the good part of an afternoon. i did it last week and it cooled my 85 off by about 10 degrees. while you're at it, i would change the thermo too. lots of people here say to go to a 160* although i dunno what else you have to do to get your car to accept something like that. have fun
Wait a minute, let me make sure I understand. You say it runs 220-240 with the thermostat in and 175 - 210 without the thermostat? So you mean you pulled the Tstat, checked the temp and then re-installed it and it ran 220-240 again? While it's always a great idea to make sure the radiator is clean, it seems to me that if the only variable that changed was the old Tstat, then the problem is with your old Tstat. I've heard that sometimes they don't open all the way so perhaps the Tstat isn't opening all the way thus restricting coolant flow and that's why when it's in, your temps are higher. But then perhaps my logic is flawed...
No, I agree. A fully open tstat would reduce flow by only about 5% over none at all. Sounds like its only opening a little bit. Can you still test in boiling water? :iagree:
My 85 runs 168 hiway and 178 city. This car has an 89 engine and trans, after market radiator, fan, thermo. Average temps today 66-72.
Don't run your car without a thermostat. Upgrade your thermostat to a 160 and buy a good after market fan and relay. The GM stuff is meant to run hot.
Also my car has a manual over ride swtich to turn on the fan. This fan cycles even with the air on. Coolest running Corvette I've ever owned.
