Going to replace the timing chain, after 87k miles. What do you think about CLOYES, from JEG'S? And a chrome timing cover, how do I set timing?
Help?
The True Double Roller chain?
Is this the best replacement.
Answer up.
Thanks
tony
I usually am a big supporter of anyone who does their own mainetnance but when you say you are going to change your timing chain and ask how to set the timing in the same sentenance I get a bit uneasy. To get to the chain everything has to be removed from the front of the engine.AIR and all its associated valves, the AC compressor (not disconnected just moved) and the water pump. This gets you to the cover. Now remove the pulley then the harmonic damper(puller required) then the oil pan. The pan and the timing chain cover interlock. Remove the cover and there is the chain. Remove the three cam bolts and the chain can be removed. The crank gear goes next, puller required. Coyles is an excellent selection but if not put in exactly right bad things happen, like valves through pistons or as a minimum bent. I have been doing this for a long time and job before last made a dumb mistake and wiped out all eight intake valves on the first two revolutions of the crank. Putting it all back together is the reverse only it must be done carefully or oil leaks are almost assured.
I suggest you buy a manual and read it in detail before you take this one on. A timing chain swap sounds simple but at the old bottom line is one stage removed from an overhaul. Others may not agree but this has been my experience. BTW if you do this put on a new water pump. Your pump is most likely closer to failing than your timing chain.
Replace the chain after 87k miles? If its not a problem now why replace it?
The chains good for 110 plus miles. If you do replace the chain get it done.
Its a lot work and takes special tools. Timing? Theres a mark on the cam gear that lines up the mark on the crank gear. With GM gears that all the timing you get.
Thanks for answering up, But I did not ask my question correctly, I ment the timing tab on the new timing chain cover.
Found one in Jegs new catalog on page 214-r, P/N 778-141-215 @ $16.99 in chrome, and it comes with timing pointer, so I can set the timing.
Only reason, besides my milage to replace the chain, was I will be installing a new FlowKooler water pump, and installing a Fluid Damper, Street Dampner, so thought I would accomplish everything at one time.
You know how that is, doing couple of things at one time .
Thanks Again
