The real tragedy here is that the guy telling the story could have helped and didn't. The reason? He said he was scared of being sued.
Nay, the real tragedy is that someone used their vette for trailing watercraft, and even worse, used it to unload/load them in the water with it! At least ask if you could borrow someone's truck for launching and loading once you got there. Stupidity is expensive.
Now that is definetly a thing of the past. You will have a hard time finding someone to let you borrow a truck because they fear what could happen. "Sir I am sure I put your truck in drive, but when I pushed the gas, back it went. Now you owe me for my jetski and trailer, my clothes, and you know what, my back is hurting now"
Same reason most won't think of asking to borrow a truck. "Sir, my truck did not have that rip in the seat or that scratch on the tailgate before you borrowed it, I need your info to give to my attorney.
It dang sure shouldn't be like this, but you all know it is.... It sucks when you can't breath easy anymore when you try to help anybody.

It seems logical to me that no one should engage in any activity with only half of the required equipment.
Look at the photos one more time. See the guy on the dock, Mr. casual watch the yellow car sink, or I hope the jet ski with the non helper was not his buddy

Until some things change about our legal system, more and more people will choose "not to get involved". He had plenty of time to grab his camera out of his car and snap 5 or 6 photos though
Sorry, but vette or not, I'm there trying to help this guy save his car (and his life) and I'd worry about the lawyers later. :boxing
hmm, must not be a "good samaritan" law in florida like there is in ak.
he needed help and many people just stood there.
you know theres a parking lot full of pickups right there too.
guess i grew up in an area where everyone helps each other but still....
nice place to live when the guys taking the pictures just watching thinking "stupid jetskier anyway-his boat is much smaller than mine..."
his wife musta ran off with a c5 jetski pulling guy with *****.
Any fellow vette owner would have at least tried to help.

It's always nice to see that attitude that other people have towards vette owners. They all think we're rich and that we think we're better than they are. I started out driving a POS myself and decided I wanted something better. I pay for it every single day of my life as every cent I own goes towards that car. How does that make me any worse of a person than anybody who wants a new pickup truck, or that new house? Or spends all their money on making their lawn look good?
People really need to grow up and realize that the kind of person you are doesn't depend on what you drive, nor does what you drive have any real indication of how much money you have. In a study some years back I believe they found that 90% of the people who drive the BMW's and have the $500,000 dollar homes are the ones that really can't afford them. The people who CAN afford this stuff can afford it because they DON'T buy it.
One of the nicest most carefree people I know lives in a very small house, and drives an 80 something CRX that he's actually had repainted! He could buy any car he wanted, but he doesn't. He's got money in the bank though, and he can go anywhere and do anything he wants at any time. He made his choice, I made mine. He's happy, I'm happy. Just because we chose different ways to use our money doesn't mean either of us is a bad person.

What we're probably missing from the story here is that the guy who originally posted it has probably done the same thing, or worse. I try not to laugh too hard at the stupid things other people do. I don't laugh because I KNOW that I have either done something just as stupid in my life, or I will at some point in the future.
If that's the stupidest thing he does in his life I would wager that he'll be just fine. If only we could all be so lucky, the life expectancy of the average individual would be much higher. Yeah it sucks for him, and it sucks for the car, but hey, at least it was a C5. Would have really sucked if he'd ruined a C4. :D
Being around boats all my life this is actually quite common. The launch ramp develops a very slick surface on it from the changing of the tides and rear wheel drive only vehicles that back up too far don't have a chance. At that point what can you do anyway? Is 10 minutes submerged in saltwater going to be any better than 20 minutes?
Saw something like this happen. I'm a fishermen and you get people that are new to boating or are so excited about the new rig that they forget to take it out of gear. The ramps have moss on them and are slick also. I don't use the Corvette to tow my boat.
At one ramp a guy with a new Explorer and Ranger Bass boat with matching paint jobs forgot to take it out of gear the whole rig went in except the boat did float away and someone got that, plug was in. It sank into the muck the truck and trailer. Nothing anyone could do but call for a tow truck and a diver. At least no one was hurt and everyone was really nice to the person and just went to another ramp on the lake.
