Default Directional issue

I am a new Corvette owner having bought a 1987 Corvette last week and am thoroughly enjoying driving it. I have an issue though that pooped up yesterday. My left directional is flashing on an off at the front and back, yet the right directional is not flashing. It does turn on (both front and back), but wont flick on and off. I have found the relay for the directionals, and it is tucked in a position that is behind the airbag and center console. It isnt easily accesible.

Since the relay is difficult to get to without dismantling the airbag, I am wondering if this issue might be because of the bulbs on their way out in both the front and back.

Has anyone come across this before? I would be interested in any experiences others have had with this issue.

Congrats on the car and welcome to the forum. :seeya

I't doesn't sound like the relay, if that was the case the other side probably wouldn't flash. I haven't had to change mine, so I'm not 100% sure, but some cars have dual stage bulbs for the flasher and parking lights. If the flasher filiment goes, the bulb will still light but neither the front or back will flash.

PS: Are you sure your car has an airbag? My '89 does not have airbags and I don't think they started equipping them until later in the '90's.

Cool, I will try that next then.

No  ....

It looked like an airbag set up on the passenger side, but there definately isnt one on the drivers side. Like I said I am a new owner so am still getting used to what it has and is.

I noticed that other new owners were posting pics of their new Corvettes up, so I will as well as well. Hopefully the image shows up. Thanks again for the welcome to the forum.

I think what your looking at on the passenger side is what they call the "breadbox". Its nothing more than a big hunk of foam and I read somewhere that GM did intend it to be part of the passenger side restraint system. Some people don't like it and there is a kit available to remove the "breadbox" and replace with a flat dash panel.

IMHO The BreadBox looks better than the flat panel......and...if you put small children in the seat it it would be a good safety factor. I Vote to Keep it.

As a follow up, it was the right front bulb that caused it.
