I have had nothing but manuals for my trucks and the vette. My next truck is going to be auto, because for everyday driving, it gets bothersome.
BUT FOR THE VETTE, I would be really dissipointed with an auto. Needless to say I have the 4+3, and it does take a long time to move that lever from first to second, but its still more exciting to control the car yourself and not have the computer do it...
AND the girlfriend can't drive stick...she races Hemi's in her Stratus
who knows what she would do to my Vette

Re: Manual vs Automatic (85RIT)
I've driven numerous Auto/Stick C4s and have to say that the 6spds are my favorite. I was never a real fan of the 4+3 so for 84-88 I would actually perfer auto, if anything goes wrong with a 4+3 not many shops are qualified to do a good job at servicing them, they also seem to be quirky on the engadgement, I don't have problems with the old 4spds or new 6spds but the 4+3 just engadges different. A stick seems sportier to me not to mention that I autocross and do track events where stick is an advantage. Your vette is a tool and you have to have the right tool for the job.
Draging+auto= :)
Autocrossing/Track+ Stick= :)
Just another (fast) moving recliner= your preferance
I don't know what you consider "serious" but I know quite a few guys running in the 9's with IRS...that's serious to me.. :yesnod: ...
Back to the topic...the answer for me is to get an additional vette with a 6 speed...I will not give up my 93 A4 for drag racing...this way I can use the MN6 for cruisin' on road trips and auto cross... :D
I'd rather eat worms than drive an automatic Corvette street car (or
road course or autocross). :D
Yeah, an automatic is going to be more consistent in bracket racing,
but I really don't consider cars with IRS to be serious drag race
cars anyway.......... :D

And the auto is not??
This is another "coupe vs. vert" debate, and there is NO LOSER!
Neither one (coupe, vert, auto, manual) is "better" than the other, they are just different.
DarkHalo, I'm thinking perhaps the differences could be attributed to the years you are comparing moreso than the transmissions involved?
Ive had and raced both. For drag racing, an auto all the way. For an all around performance car, a stick is the way to go. A fast stick usually means a DRIVER is behind the wheel.
Whatever works for the owner!!
I'm not even going to bother with the auto/manual debate, but for the record there are some people on the forum running 10s, and expecting 9s with 44 rears. I have a 4+3 and you can shorten up the throws (about half) real nice with those $20 arms all the catalogs offer.
I drive a super 10 top 2 all day every day. The last thing I want when I get in my 'Vette is to have to row through the gears.
BTW, a super 10 top 2 is a semi-truck transmission. It is a double H layout just like any 5 or 6 speed but, there is a splitter **** on the side to split each gear and 9th to 10th is automatic. Confused? Ask any trucker which he or she would prefer in thier daily driver.
Edit: I test drove a LT4 car about 6mos ago and definately wouldn't mind having to row through the gears on that car. Of course the rear tires wouldn't last long if I was driving it.
This is my 2nd Vette and I now drive an 87 vert AUTOMATIC with 145,000 miles on the engine and tranny. I'm still amazed at how much fun it is and how great it drives. It still smokes the tires and will keep up with just about anything on the road.
I don't know what you consider "serious" but I know quite a few guys running in the 9's with IRS...that's serious to me.
A 9 second car is certainly by all accounts a "serious" car - no
argument there. But you have to admit, independent rear suspension
is VERY much an anomaly in 9 second drag cars.................

Someone should just cut and save this whole thread.
Save it for 2-3 months when this topic resurfaces again.
Then paste it in.
Save a lot of time.
