Default Oil Temp ?

Temperature here is in the 20's 30's.
Is it normal for the oil temp. to go up much slower than the water temp ??

My 88 does in both summer and winter. THe water temp far outpaces the oil for the first 5 or 10 minutes of driving. Then, the oil temp usually goes slightly higher than the water. Summer temp of the oil is usually over 225 F

The oil temp ALWAYS goes up slower than the water :yesnod: Many people think, oh the water's up to temp so I'll floor it now... :nono: You gotta watch the oil temp too. It's slower...

:iagree:

Yep. Every car I've owned with oil temp readout does the same thing: oil temp lags, then surpasses coolant temp. It's normal.

Yep, it's slower alright, mine even starts out colder!! If it's 40 outside when I get in my car my water will be 45 and oil will be 36 or something like that.
What should oil temp. be before "getting on it"? I wait til after 150, never before it!!

Yep, it takes longer!

At cruising, my water temp is around 177 and oil at 196

Let it idle for a while in the driveway before driving it. Not a good idea to really get into it until oil is somewhere above 150
