My brake pedal intermittantly gets rock hard and I have to stand up on it to stop. Actually it happens about 50% of the time now. I still have good stopping power, but just have to use a lot of force, almost like engine isn't running. I'm sure it's power booster, just want to confirm my instincts. Also hoping for any advise on replacing it, is it as easy as it looks? How expensive?
Thanks guys
If it's the booster, it's a pain to replace according to everyone! This is what happened to mine last fall. I purchased a replacement booster just in time--they recently stopped making them for the '84. Check my web site--I think I put the info there about who still had them in stock ( http://www.cskauto.com/ I think)--and at a price that was HALF of what others were selling them for!
Needless to say I haven't installed the new one yet...i'm dreading it... :nopity
Its probably the booster but i was racing to work one day when i was late. It was a hot summer day and when i got to work I pushed on the brakes and I had to really stand on them. I think thats brake fade. When it cooled the car was fine. Check for vaccum leak, if all lines are fine or if you hear a hiss from the diaphram in the booster, its the booster. I replaced mine with a kragen auto special. lifetime guarantee, I have about 60000 miles on this one with no problems. Its not that hard to take off, you have to get under the dash and i think its two bolts plus linkage to the pedal. good luck :smash:
