My cousin Matt wants to buy this 1985 he saw in the paper.
1985 auto. copper color 101,000 miles for 3,500
I think that he should wait and maybe save up for a 1989 or newer.
This vette might be a money pit. The owner has owned it for only 4 mons and he said it needed a paint job. Any advice?
It's probably a mess, but why not check it out anyway? What are you out? If it's halfway decent then it's a steal for $3500. If it's not then all you're out is a few minutes of your time.
85's are great cars in my opinion, But with that year you pay for what you get. Mine was not cheap but its what I always wanted so I bought it. If you go check it out test drive it real hard.
Just check it out. If you buy a 85 with a so so paint job you'll end up painting it anyway. Same goes for the interior. If it's just a little shabby rather than completely gone you pay more for the car than end up redoing it anyway. As long as the car is structuraly OK you have a good deal.
Any Vette is a money pit.If hes got alot of money to burn, then by all mean. Now that these cars are next to nothing in price, people see the chance to finelly get into a Corvette. But what they dont understand is that even though these cars are dirt cheap, parts and upkeep are not.Spend some money and get a nice car.
Here's the real clue. If he can fix the stuff that breaks himself, the car may be a bargain. If he can't, he's in for some serious financial sodomy. These cars are NOT cheap to have someone else fix, but they aren't particularly hard to work on either.

That reminds me...
The dealership quoted me $450 to change the fuel pump, said it was a 2hr 20m job. I did it in 1/2 hour for $60 in parts. (I only call them to see how much $ I'm saving, I've never given them my business! )
And for this 85... it's kind of hard to tell. If he has trouble selling it, you don't want it. If it goes quick to a smart buyer, then you missed out on a good deal.
It's sort of like the Salem witch trials... Throw the bitch overboard, if she floats, she's a witch and gets burned at the stake, if she drowns, then she isn't a witch, but by then she's dead anyways! :D
1985s are great cars. You could get a Z51 Auto in 85. I would check it out with him and know what stuff costs so you can tell him.
See the seats are bad, thats $500, paint $1000 - $2500, weather striping $600, carpet $300.... you get the idea. If he still wants it, he should buy. He does not need to know how to work on it but does need to be willing to learn.
If it ran and shifted good I would buy it. Don't let him get the fever and buy a dog. It is easy to do.
