How do modified vetts compare to other exotic and import cars in top end and highway pulls? most of these other engines have DOHC and much higher redlines. there is always a lot of talk about quarter mile times for both but im curious if the corvette is out of its element with top end pulls?
this is very true but i was talking about the pushrod V8s such as the L98 and the LT1 and LT4
Just because it has pushrods doesn't mean it can't spin. Horsepower is limited only by budget. At work, we routinely spin bigblocks and smallblocks to 8500rpm+ on the engine dyno :D
Corvettes are great because they can be fast in many different ways.
If you want to build a solid streetable drag car, corvettes could do the job.
If you want to build a solid road course/track car, corvettes could do the job.
If you want to build an exotic killer, corvettes could also do the job.
It really depends on what you want to do with you car?
Corvettes could really do it all!
Personally, this is the way I see it...
You want a Top End Killer? Buy a 90 ZR1 and give it a bottle...
You want a Low End Killer? Buy a 88 Callaway TT and BPU it.
L98's fall flat around 100mph. And have a top end of about 155.
LT1's Pull very hard up to 130 and have a top end of 170.
Don't know how much faster the LT4 is, but I bet its substancially faster then the LT1 on the top end. I bet it gets to its top e nd quicker.

Isn't BPU an import term? :)
Actually my car is better from a 40mph roll, first gear isn't as great b/c the turbos have to spool up. Put the pedal down at 100mph and you will get pushed in your seat....hard. ;) Ive only had it to 150 but it was still accelerating effortlessly and fast.
Back to the topic at hand...a modified LT4 can put out some good power. But you won't be competeing with the modded Supras out there. Now if you want to put a blower and build a stroker thats a whole other ball game. But a heads and cam car won't make you the king.
FWIW I don't know of any really fast imports besides the Supra  Im sitting here thinking what might be a topend import...
The LS1 cars with a few mods can handle most of whats out there with ease.
ack...forget the *** imports...they have a tendency of falling apart at speed...IMO the only thing to look out for are the Brabus/Renntech Mercedes, Dinan BMWs and RUF/Gemballa Porsches...
I wouldnt dismiss the *** imports so fast as falling apart at speeds. I have quite a few friends with 300ZXs and Supras both putting out over 500rwhp and they absolutly FLY on the interstate. not much can pull with them from a 70-80mph start. I am wondering if a vett can be modded to do the same even though it doesnt have DOHC or turbos

Cold you please tell me what *** import fall apart at speeds?
All of those are interesting replies. I dont know how many of you are in close contact with guys that are totally sold on imports but one of their favorite types of race is to get on the highway doing about 70-80 and to gun it from there. not nessecarily to find out who has the highest top speed, but to find out who has the best top end pull. i am wondering how a corvette could compete with this. does anybody know what hte ZF is geared to for top speed?
I just wanted to ask a side question before this turns into an import vs american cars.
Lets say a vette's top speed is 170, what other imports can hang with that?
Also, are their cars that can hang with the callaway TTs at top end?
So if almost everybody here is agreeing that even a pushrod can hang with a DOHC as long as it is making the same power? this doesnt seem right since the DOHC vehicles are going to have a lot higher redline. BTW im NOT trying to start an import vs domestic war. just curious since not a lot of pushrod V8s tend to get into this kind of racing. i used to think it was kind of dumb myself till i have been in a vehicle and watched another drop a few gears and take off like it was launched on slicks!

I should elaborate...not all *** imports are bad cars. The Supras, Skylines, and RX-7s can be made very nice. However, what I was mainly refering to was the amount of cars out there that aren't build right. For instance, when a person is doing their own mods, and doesn't know much about engines, it is easy to do it all wrong. Try to slap a turbo putting out 12 psi of boost down on a engine with stock internals(head gasket, pistons, rods, injectors, etc) and a 10.5:1 compression ratio (not to mention nitrous which is oh so popular...) and you're going to have a serious problem on your hands...
I know not all *** imports are built this way, but some are, and those were the ones I was refering to. And face it, the Japanese build quality is just not that of the cars built in Europe or here in America...
