Default Paint problems

I just painted my removable top. I put about 5 or 6 coats of paint and a few coats of clearcoat on it. It has dried for about a week, the color match is fine, but I notice the paint is not very smooth--and if I try to wax it, the wax gets embeded in the paint and hard to remove. Any suggestions? I need to get this fixed, but don't have the $$$ for a professional paint job

Try this...Go over the top with 1200 grit wet paper (make sure and keep the surface wet with water). When the paint begins to smooth out somewhat, switch to 1500 then 2000 grit paper and wet sand. This will take out most imperfections, then buff with compound, then polish and then wax. If the surface is not too bad, this will definately help. If you go through the clearcoat with the sanding in attempt to smooth the surface, the imperfections may be too deep to fix with sanding and buffing. If so, sand with 400 wet, put a couple coats of basecoat paint on it, and about 3 or 4 light coats of clearcoat. Make sure you thin the clear down a BUNCH, to get the clear to lay down smooth and almost eliminate any "orange peel" on the surface. If clear is sprayed on too thich, the result will be a very rough textured surface, and it is difficult to fix. Mix the clear at LEAST 50/50 mix with reducer, then add catalyst. (I refinish cars, and I have learned this from experience, I hope this helps!).
