Replacing the Bose System
I am starting the process of replacing the Bose System in my '96 coupe. After having an Alpine system in my truck for several years that is the head unit I am going with. (7897). I also have MB Quart components in the truck and love the sound I get from them.
My first question is what adaptor do I need and where can I find it for mounting the head unit?
Second, has anyone mounted speakers to the stock mounting brackets? What size did you find that fit? Does anyone know what size the non-Bose stock speakers are/were for a '96?
Third, has anyone mounted a sub-woofer in to either of the storage compartments behind the seats?
Thanks for the info and replys in advance>

Yes the sub can be mounted in the cargo. You can have a box fabricated for you of wood or fiberglass, the latter is pretty heavy. I am making my own box for the rear so I can take it out if I need the room or when I race.
The non bose speakers, should be in the dash and should be 4X7" at least that's what it is on the older C4's. I had to creat mounting brackets for my speakers to fit in the door location. I also had to open up the hole a little more for the 6.5's to fit.
I believe the mounting hole on the door is there behind your door panel. Anyone know for sure? If so, you could use it if you can get past cutting your door panel. Good luck!
You can possibly mount an amp behind the seat if you are short enough that you don't have to have the seat all the way back, but it will be real close. Check out the audio/electronics area of the forum under "Forums" then "General Corvette Topics" . Everything you could possibly want to know will be in there.

4.5" fit perfect in the enclosure in the front (door sill area)
6.5" fir perfect in the rear enclosures.
The bose speakers are total garbage. They are simple to replace with these sizes (perhaps a coupe has different rears I dont know) In any event do'nt go the adaper route. Just replace the speakers too.
You will also have to bypass the "preamp" which on mine is located under the passenger side dash. While you have that apart you might as well run new wire.
Bypassing the pre amp is what took mine so long to do. now that i know it has to be done i could do the entire job in about 2 hours. You can buy a kit for the Late C4's right at circuit city to put a din unit in.
Big difference. Heck you could put the chapest thing best buy has to offer in there and it would be a big upgrade. Good luck with the install.
