The dash on my 86 seems to have fine dust particles stuck in it. It feels rough when you run your hand across it and they show up under flourescent light at night. Would this be from someone spraying a replacement dash with dye or is it just the way they are?? I know that replacement dash pads for some GM vehicles only come in one color and have to be dyed.
If its any other color then black then its dyed. My 85 is fine if i ever have to wipe it down. It should have that smooth feel to it no matter how dirty it is. Most likely if you feel its rough and think that someone dyed it your probably right.
supposably the car only has 29,000 miles on it. I ran a carfax check on it before I bought it and it came up clean. I am starting to wonder if carfax can be fooled. The car is very clean, but there is the dash issue, the ECM has been replaced, and the hose clamps under the hood have been painted black like it has been detailed.
well carfax is really only good if your car was in an accident. little things like the dash is not something some will report. It could also be that someone used a cleaner and ruined the texture. Take a baby wipe and see what shows up. If its the actual dash or paint coming up.
If it has that OEM texture & look it likely hasn't been painted as that is very hard to duplicate.
Try working in an ample quantity of Formula 2001 and then buff it off thoroughly.
If it's realy rough maybe you could hit it lightly (wet) with some 1,000 or 2,000 grit paper. Maybe 800 grit would be ok, but test an obscure area (yea on the dash i know) first.

Re: Dusty 86 dash (dieseltech)
Is the interior worn much? It's possible it's a rollback with no prior history. How about the rubber pads on the pedals? These are a great indicator of mileage, and are usually looked over when restoring an interior.
Painting the hose connections is a dealership trick.. keeps small leaks from appearing for a few days.
