Default Living dangerously

Well last night I drive over to Annandale for I've heard that cars hang out there on friday nights. Well I get there and it's a small parking lot, and only like 12 cars there. So I decide to go to the sterling Chik Fil'a where I know a ton of cars will be. Another corvette follows me there and we take the beltway (495). cruising along at 70 I smell coolant and wonder who's it coming from. I look in the rear veiw and see steam billowing out of my car! now I notice steam from the hood. I pull to the left shoulder, which is barely wider than the car. Pop the hood and one of my heater hoses popped off the water pump (the hard one the reach). I go over to the other vette to ask for a screwdriver. No screwdriver, so I cost me .02 cents to get it back on as I had to lay across the engine and tighten it with a penny of which I dropped 2. All this while cars sre whizzing by at 70+ mph and all I could think of was the police video of a car smashing into a police car that has pulled someone over. I get the hose on pour my bottled water (about half a liter) into the coolant resevoir tank. I make it to Chik Fil'a with the car running only 5 degrees hotter, and still alive.

Your lucky. I would carry a small tool kit in the car.
It doesn't have to have that much in it just the basic tools.
I carry one and I've used it more helping other people
than I have myself.

You got lucky! My C4 has never failed me but I always keep a small tool kit in it just in case. I picked up one at Target complete with a test light for a pretty reasonable price.

Pep boys or AutoZone or even Wal Mart have small tool kits with a few sockets as well as some screw drivers and other misc stuff for real cheap. Yeah, its not Snap-On or Craftsman, but if your (hopefully) not going to need to use it much, i'm sure it would work fine just to get you to home or somewhere where you could fix it with good tools. Probably small and light enough that you could keep it in the car without taking up any space or adding any real weight to the car.

I can feel your pain....that location surely isn't an ideal place to break down.

Two years ago, a Greyhound bus lost a tire and rim on the Balt-Wash Parkway. I swerved and it slammed into my front left tire and rim...I still remember how frightening it was standing on the narrow shoulder on such a busy highway!!

Good thing you were able to get it fixed, and lived to tell about it!!

Pack a pair of vice grips in the car so if it ever happens again, you'll have something better to grasp the penny with. :jester

Brothers:

Buy a Leatherman multitool and put it in your console compartment. A cheap repro is better than none at all, but, trust me on this one, a good Leatherman (around $50-60) may well pay for itself some day. Also, the good ones will last a lifetime.

Put this next on your mod list.

On a safety note. Be very careful out there on the side of any highway. I've been a paramedic for over 8 years now and have seen more than my share of innocent people mangled on the side of the road. I'm to the point that if i have a flat, i'll drive on a rim if i have to to get off the road and into a parking lot.
