Thanks to Agent 86 for the idea and pointers  wired the detector out of the rear view mirror. worked like a champ. the left mirror light area is a bit crowded so i passed the wires through to the right side where there is plenty of room for the fuse holder. tried the ecklers long bolt mirror detector mount but no good for my year, not a direct bolt on, requires drilling and crap. so it's the old suction cups, but the location is perfect. :hurray:
Hey that's the EXACT same detector I just gave to a buddy of mine the other day!! Is it a good one??? ( I guess it's a little late for me to be asking that!)
Since the wire they give you for the detector is so long...I ran mine down the pillar through the hush panel on the passenger side to the extra accessory wire GM provides under the power seat panel.
Sure...more wire than this solution...but that's what I did!!
Very nice! I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Tapped into one of the wires in the rear view and used the long bolt mount from Vettequest. It screws right into the rear view mirror mount (replacing the screw) and was a direct fit for my '96. I like the mount and best of all, no suction cups. Here is a link: http://www.vettequest.com/pages/radarbracket.html
not sure, depends on the bracket for your detector. it is just a 1/4" rod. so if your bracket has a hole (or can be drilled) and the angle is correct (or can be bent), it should work. it's also in the ecklers catalog
 I too wired into the rear view mirror, but I bought a cheap rearview mirror and removed the shaft with swivels, etc.
I mounted that horizontally, right to left, behind installed rear view. I took the suction cup mount apart (Bel 985) and just used the part that clips into the detector which screwed in very easily to the mirror mounting shaft.
Whole thing is nice and high and all sits behind the stock rear view
I've been considering doing this for a while as well. Which wires (colors?) did you tap in to. Please e-mail the instructions you have or consider posting in tech tips.

Thanks!
 Pics don't show much unfortunately, it trully is hard to see and the whole combination is black so it all blends together.
As to wires, I loosened the plastic header at winshield and removed the wiring harness to the mirror. All the wires (there were three), were black. so I had to skin all three and use the multi meter to determine + and-, If you go into the back of the mirror itself you can pick up wire colors
