Anybody got a link or web site to refer me to ----- radio works fine on my 84 -until it cuts out for no particular reason--- i believe tuner is still working (since stations still scan)--- but no sound out of any speakers--- then system returns. Any help in troubleshooting problem would be appreciated :smash:
Sounds like your amp relay is on it's way out. I had similar problem till I cleaned the points in the relay. They are cheap enough to replace, but repairing offered instant results. On my 86, it's attached to the dash support brace behind passenger side dash. Pain in the **** to get to :smash: I have an aftermarket dash panel so it was a bit easier to get to. You might be able to reach it from below and unplug the connector, and plug in a new relay. You will not be able to unscrew it from below. It, roughly behind lower left corner of passenger dash panel (bread loaf)

Try this. When it cuts out, thump the side of the console under the dash with the side of your fist (NOT WHILE YOU'RE MOVING, PLEASE!) If the radio comes on, it is probably the connector in back of the control head. Pull it, remove the connector and clean the connector and board with QD Electronic Cleaner.
I had the same problem. And you're right. The relay is a pain to get at. I just disconnected the relay, plugged in the new relay, and left the old relay sitting, still screwed in place. Because of the location of the old relay, it was all I could do to just TOUCH the thing. I sure couldn't get close enough to put a wrench to it. (I wasn't about to tear my dash apart.) One day, if the situation arises where I need to tear into my dash for some other fix, I'll yank the old relay.
Check out www.carstereohelp.com They have everything on there, from radio removal, to troubleshooting. If you call them , they are very helpful over the phone as well.
The help you guys gave is just fabulous!!!! --- tonight it finally stopped raining in NYC area and I took my 84(w/nonworking radio) for a ride--- sure enough, I rapped with the side of my fist, the right side of the console/transmission housing (under the left side of the passenger dash "bread loaf) twice--- and long behold --- the radio went on!!! Now I know the problem is the relay for sure and will use the other info listed in this forum site to permanently fix the problem--- thanks for all your help
PS -- I swear the car runs better also!!
