I have a 1992 convertible with a six speed. And I love it but I can't stop thinking about getting a C5. But they are pretty expensive and it seems like everyone has one. My wife says she will kill me if I get another vette right now. I had a 78 for 18 months and now I have had my 92 for 6 months. Try and talk me out of this. I need the help.
All the convincing you will need will probably be to drive a C5. You will either love it or hate it. Most C4 owners will tell you that the C5 has really lost it's sports car feel. For myself there's no argument needed, I prefer my C4 to a C5 in every aspect. In the end though it all boils down to personal preference.
Can't help ya. I bought a '98 Vert on Friday to go with my '94. Both are awesome and you will love 'em. :D
We had our Williamsburg Winery cruise yesterday and I stretched the legs on the '98 for the first time. Nice.
She loves the C5 for the ride, I like the C4 for the car. Power isn't much difference. Both are basically stock and she actually thinks the C4 is quicker from 50-100 and I think it's quicker than the C5 off the line. I haven't pushed the C5 quite as hard as the C4 yet, so we'll see.
If my C4 were a vert like you have, I probably wouldn't have added the C5 yet, but found a great deal. Either way, they're both great rides. C5 prices are awesome right now, and will probably only get better with the C6 coming out. If I had to choose, it'd be a tough call. Both have strong points. Keep them both.

Re: C4 versus a C5 (92BlackRoseconv)
You don't need help bud...
You're just lusting over another woman... a younger one... with fresher curves...
One word of advice...
Don't get rid of your 92 filly just because the new one looks pretty... give the C5 a spin more than once to feel if she fits your bottom and driving style...
Personally... I like the lower seat in my 90 as opposed to sitting in the C5's seat... but shorter people tend to like the C5 because they can see out better.
The difference between an Lt1 and LS1 aren't that great, unless your being reckless on the high way you will never really see the difference.
Stock LS1 autos are about the same or slower then LT1 6spds.
Drive a c5 make up your own mind. The Looks of the C5 have just grown on me tremendously, and thats the only reason I'd buy one. But then I think in 5-10 years the C5 looks will be very outdated (like some believe the C4 is now) so i dont know.
Traded my 94 on a 2003 and really love the C5. The C4 had to many rattles on sqeaks. I also like the ride in the C5 - not feeling every bump. I would have loved to keep the 94 polo green coup but the wife said nope, every once in a while i miss her
But when i take the c5 out for a spin I could not be happier :D
take a c5 out for a spin - there is some great deals going on right now
Personally, I feel the C5 has no soul. My girlfriend has an '02 vert (auto, Z51, perf axle), which I enjoy driving on the interstate and for long trips. It feels nowhere near as tight as my 92 (even when it was stock), and certainly doesn't feel like a sports car to me.
That's just my opinion, but I won't be getting rid of my C4 anytime soon... and certainly not for a C5. If I were you, I would look at the B2K and ZR-1's. There's some great deals to be had there as well.
Do you do a lot of your own "work" (isn't it all a labor of love) on the car? I have no issues with my C4, but a friend that races in the Trans Am class swears by the C5. Says it is a lot easier to access the tranny.
My opinion ? Don't do it. Hang on to your C-4. Reason ?? Black Box ! It's a little thing under the front seat of any C-5 that if anything happend big brother can check your speed, brakes and read everything the car was doing even if you have on your seat belt. It's no one's business if I'm flying. It's MY CAR ! Think, voiding warranty on a C-5 once the black box is read.
C-5's have tons of issues and still do. Steering wheel lock up that's still not fixed, brakes that are crappy at best, seats that fall off the track etc. Not to mention if you get a coupe it looks like the green giant put his butt print on the roof. Look at a C-5 honestly. Not a very good looking car. Lighter, yes. More options, yes. More things that can go wrong and do. Get in a 5 and close the door. Then get in your 4 and close the door. You know you are closing a door on a car with a 4.
C-4's from the side are mean looking, agressive looking from the front and have a rear end to envy. A C-5 ? someone stepped on the hood and squished it, flat and wide. There is no mistaking the 4th generation of vette on the road.
C-4's are tried and true. List the things gone wrong with a C-4 and then list the C-5, you will have a list that goes on and on and on. Unless you only drive a 5 on the weekends it will be in the shop more than on the road.
Take the power of a ZR1 put it in a C-5 and watch it blow up. Paint is another issue. Is there an Admiral Blue C-5 ? Nope. No matter what the color of a C-4 they are great looking. C-5's ? Red, blue, black, white, silver, yellow. YAWN.
I personally will never give up my 89. I would like to add a 95 or 96 to the family but give up the 89 ? Not gonna happen.
Most of us C-4 owners can do things under the hood. Talk to a C-5 owner about doing something, anything under the hood and you'll get the deer in the headlight look. They can dust em off pretty good but that's about it.
Not to mention the cost of mods or make pretty piecesparts on a C-5. Everything starts at $100.00 and goes up from there. Tires are another high priced item on a C-5. I made the mistake of putting 2000 tires and rims on the car to give it a different look for shows. Different alright. I need new rubber on the back end and the silly tires are $350.00 each ! My original sawblades and tires are only $119.00 each for good Kumho's that can handle any weather situation and speed. Think lost key fob. That little baby alone is $150.00 to replace. If I misplace a key ? $10.00 at the dealership.
The prices are dropping on the 5's with the C-6 ready to hit the road. If you want to pick up a 5 cheap and use it as a daily driver then go with it and save the C-4.
Sorry to be so negative but I wouldn't do it, not on a bet. You said it yourself " Everyone has one". Be different. Stand out in a crowd. Save the C-4. Not to mention most C-5 owners have no clue about saving the wave ! Most are kids who are clueless about the history of a vette. All of us in the C-4 section know the history, chip in to help one another. Shoot I'm in Texas and had a guy from California break down on his way home from picking up a car in Florida and Nathan from Bowling Green helped out with the repair. Look at the C-5 forum. read that dribble. They are all giggy about keeping the car clean and what to wash the car with complaining about bird do-do. Get real. C-4 folks are a much higher class of human and I'm sure it will irritate the C-5ers but there is more to life than the local Zaino dealer.
Is there a ZR1 like 5th generation ? Is there a Grand Sport like C-5 ? No ! The 5th generation is all fluff. We drive a real vette ! We all know what it is to run through the gears and feel the power throw you back in the seat. We can still get 25 plus mpg at 100 mph. The C-5 might be a good touring car on the highway but a new pick up will do the same thing for ya.
Again, sorry to be so negative. Make up your own mind. Do what your gut tells you to do. Walk outside and look at your car and the grin on your face when you see er that will be the deciding factor.
