Default Restore additive question.

I've never used the stuff but have known about it for a long time. My question is how do you use it? Do you continually use it like with every oil change or is it something you use only til it stops burning oil?

I wouldn't put any kind of additive in my car....IMO they are all JUNK that gunks up the engine. Only thing I MIGHT consider is a fuel injector cleaner and I've only used this in my truck. Maybe some of them work but I wouldn't use um unless the engine needed rebuilt anyway and you wanted to take a chance to make it run a little longer/better.

Quality motor oil doesn't need additional additives so long as you change oil and filter at proper intervals.

That stuff is crap. I took apart a motor that someone had used the stuff in and it had setteled into a thick putty in the bottom of the pan and in the valve train areas. CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!

No, I wasn't thinking of ever using the stuff but was just wondering how it's used. One time deal or with every change? Just an enquiry.

I used a highly TV advertised additive years ago and eventually rebuilt the engine (not because of the additive). The fact that the additive was thicker then oil should have been a clue! All the the additive was in the bottom of the oil pan just like someone poured honey into it. What a mess to clean out.

The only additive Ive ever used (in my 94 Dakota V-6 daily driver) is
Slick 50. It seems to have helped that motor live. I have 234,000 miles
on it. Oil pressure is 65 lbs hot, compression on 5 of 6 cylinders is
140 +, #6 is 120. However, I would NEVER use anything like that,
or any other product in my vette. Mobil 1 every 3,000 miles and a
HIGH QUALITY filter only. My 96 coupe has 90,000 and uses no oil.
Why risk trouble.

The only additive I ever used was the Slick fuel injection/carb cleaner that you pour into your tank. I would be afraid the use any other additive on the vette since they look thicker than whatsalready in your engine.

All of those "miracle in a bottle" items are made for one purpose, to take your money. If the rings are worn to the point that your burning too much oil, there's only one thing that will cure the problem....a rebuild. Save your money.

Redline injector cleaner works great.

Don't use anything but Mobil 1 period (obviously if you want to use other quality synthetics like Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple that is ok 2)

Glad to see everyone sticking to the party line. HOWEVER. Restore is not an oil additive like Slick 50. Restore is a copper alloy in suspension which will attach itself to surface and "restore" original clerances. I first saw it used years ago by the Maryland HP. Don't recall exact numbers but it extended engine life considerably. I used it to prolong the life of the wifes Caddy,35k worth. I wouldn't touch the run of the mill additives but Restore does work. Not a magic bullet but it helps

Normal motors run 200,000+ anyway. I say when it needs a rebuild - just rebuild it.

I'll stick my $.02 in here....
You put one can in the car and drive it. It works, too.

Years ago I used it in a smoking water-cooled VW that I bought for my son as his first car. Even though I think all those additives are snake oil, I put a can of Restore in the engine (nothing to lose) and ....guess what...the smoking stopped. Stopped for three years, it did! (then we swapped a bigger motor in)
Several months ago, a guy at work came to me wanting to buy a 406 SB I have in my garage. Seems as though the 350 in his '56 Chevy street rod was smoking and he wanted to replace it. I told him what Restore did to the VW and he tried it. Guess what again...the smoking stopped in that 350. The guy was incredulous!
Now, that doesn't mean it will work in every engine, every time...but it worked in the two cases I have first-hand knowledge of.

Restore has lead, copper, and silver in it and it seems to help ring seal on marginal engines.
Anything with Teflon in it is useless; Dupont (makers of polytetraflouroethylene, or PTFE....Teflon) issued a release some years ago that said that Teflon in an oil additive will do absolutely nothing to an engine, good or bad. I believe them.

I don't see how suspended particles "attach themselves" restoring original clearances? Just because some marketer comes up w/ clever lingo doesn't make it true. This reminds me of the "dry wash in a bottle" stuff that "encapsulates" the dirt particles and safely removes them without scrating the paint.

How many miles did you get out of this engine? Is it not possible that the engine would have made it this far anyway?

I offer my '86 Chevy Siverado as an example. It has 200,543 mile on it and still runs great. It's had Castrol 10W-30 in it since day one. Imagine if it had Mobil One or Royal Purple, or Redline Oil in it from day one. There are several people who would swear on their Grandmother's grave that the only reason it still runs great after 200,000 miles is because of the Mobil One, Royal Purple, or Redline .

i'll put in my .02 as well,

i used to have an old dodge van with a 360 small block. i put in Duralube with one oil change. i figure what the ...., nothin' to lose right? so anyways, about 6 months later, the oil pump went out and i lost all oil pressure. that damn engine ran for 4 more months as a daily driver with NO oil pressure! i ended up trading in the van to a dealership, and that motor never quit on me.

now i wouldn't necessarily put that stuff in the vette, but for me it worked like a charm....
