Default Temp Guage Fluctuations???

Hello, Im new here. I am looking for some info, I have an 84 crossfire vette, just recently the coolant temp guage began to go nuts. It will be going up like normal, then go from 180 to 240 then to 175 and so on. It just goes all over the place for a bit then stops. Im not sure if it is reading correctly when it stops or not. I put in a new temp sensor and that didnt help, suggestions???

The obvious answer is to replace the coolant sensor. I'm not sure where its located, though. However, have you checked to make sure your coolant level is where it should be?

Just replaced the coolant sensor, and the fluids are all good and topped off. The problem persists unfortunately, and Im kinda afraid to drive it...

Sounds like wiring then. The guage is a variable resistence type meaning that as the temp changes the resistence changes and moves the needle. You might want to follow the wiring from the sensor and check for shorts. It could also be a ground.

Does it do this whether your moving or not?

Yes, when I changed the sensor last night in the garage I let it warm up, it did it even sitting in the garage. Maybe the ECM?

PS: It is a digital Dash, isnt that controlled by the ECM?

Make sure you have all the air out of the system. Your high spikes could be hot air passing the sensor.

Default Fixed!

Hey all who helped, thanks! I took the car down to Corvettes of Houston this morning. Turns out the C4 has 3 temp sensors for the coolant. The one I had replaced was for the ECM, they replaced the one for the digital guage and the car is showing to cool great, looks like the old one was lying to me all along! Thanks again!
