86 Rear Hatch Struts

Bought replacement GM hatch struts from The Last Detail for $96.00. New struts have removable clip to attach to window ball - very simple. Problem comes in trying to remoce old struts - no clips on originals - appear to be press fit into window ball. I'm afraid to try and pull strut off ball as hatch could break. How do you get 86 struts off?

Old ones have clips on inside. I used needle nose pliers between the ball mount and old strut retainers. I just pried them off square and gently. No trouble.
