Guys,,, my AC's been great, but the other day,,, funny, right before i left for my new job in WA, the AC was running and I was noticing that my volts were droping down low and when looking at the engine, noticed that the condenser was icing up...
Turned off AC the the volts were back at 14v, with lights/sterio on, 13.7v constant, turn on AC and volts dropped to 12.4-12.6v...
Any Ideas would be appreciated... ?????
didnt you put a 140 amp alt on? My stock alt. does that on a regular basis
BTW you should never see Ice on the condenser....evaporator but not the condenser. that should only be hot transferring the interior heat to the outside air.
We had high humidity here the last few days.
Did you mean the Accumulator? That gets pretty cold.

Condensor will never ice up.....Thats where heat is removed, and the refrig turns into a liquid. Must be the accumulator, and I agree, probably could indicate a leak. Either that or high humidity conditions have persisted, which could cause that. Shutting it down for awhile to defrost will fix that. Have you been running it with the windows open or top off??? Could be the thermostat control sticking, calling for a/c also. Now that I've thrown all this on you.............
Its (sorry about this) the unit (silver) right behind the rad infront of the compressor,,, compressor works fine ( I think) turns,,,, I'm back in town on the 11 of august... for 4-5 days, so maybe i can take a look at it then again...
If you are getting ice ( frost ) back on the small tank ( Receiver ) there are two possibly causes. If you just had some repairs, it may be overcharged. Icing on a suction line is also caused by some blockage in the evaporator coil. Poor air speed over the coil, dirty evaporator or heater coil block air. It's normal to see just a wet tank, not ice or heavy frost.

Vinnie, If you and your Vette are now in the Burlington/Mt Vernon area, you might want to call Dave Overton, owner of Corvette Alley in Anacortes. Dave just fixed my AC and most all in our Vette Club use his talents. Dave's phone # is 360-299-9303. I think I told him about you and your great looking Vette when you 1st posted you were moving to our neck of the woods. Welcome, Bill
Bill... hey thanks,,, the vette is still in vegas,,, will relocate her when i get a place here with a garage... but just knowing that there is a vette place is nice to know.. I'll add it in my files... I'm back in LV on the 11th, so maybe have it checked out there, know a good place and reliable service... thanks vince
If it hasn't been serviced, I'd suspect the low pressure switch. Quick check would be to wait until it's 70 degrees or less, then see if the compressor cycles on and off with a cold start. If not, the switch is probably not working properly. It's in on a schrader valve (meaning you don't have discharge it to replace it), attached to the evaporator outlet or bigger pipe from the firewall to the canister (Accumulator/Drier).
