I'm having trouble with the outside tail light and the flasher/brake light (on my 85). It is not the bulb. If I tap on the lens, the light begins to flash again. It periodically goes out and the flasher doesn't work, a bump in the road might bring it back or I'll have to tap on it! I've checked the socket and it doesn't look bad (as if I could tell anyway!) so I'm in a quandry! Should I look for a new socket? (I'll be at Carlisle.) If that's the problem, how do I get it out! There is not a lot of room to get more than one hand in there!! I'm not a big guy but the fingers aren't as agile as they used to be! What do I do??
You may have corrosion in the socket itself.Getting to its not easy as you know. From your post I believe youve had it out, yes. If not the socket will fit into the taillight and twist, then lock into place. To remove it you need to depress the tab and twist the socket to remove it.Once you get it ot check all the wires,3 I think and look for a loose wire. Also replace the bulb while you have it out.
I was experiencing a similar problem a few months ago on my '93. I was at a total loss since I had just replaced the offending bulb recently. It turns out, when I inserted the new bulb, I didn't actually twist it as much as I should've, which left the bulb loose. Therefore, every bump in the road would rattle the bulb and cause it to either work itself into or out of the socket, causing intermittent functionality.
Not sure if this'll help, but thought I'd share my experience
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll change the bulb and see if that helps the connection, the wires don't appear to be loose but that's a wild guess!! Who knows what the connection looks like.
Sound like either a loose tail light or not a good ground. In the 1996 they are hard to get at and all the C-4s are a little different to get at. I found the best way is to follow the owners manual and check for a loose tail light. Good luck.
