Default Failed IL Emissions

I thought my 88 vette was in good shape to pass the emissions test. It passed 2 years ago out in Washington. The HC was 2.07 against a standard of 0.80 GPM. The CO was 2.3 against a standard of 15.0 GPM. Does any one know what GPM stands for? Most of the other states use PPM and %. The test technician said my engine was drowning in fuel. I don't understand that statement since the BLM's are within 128 +/- 3. I changed oil/filter and checked fuel pressure (Right on 43 psi) before the test. I also drove the Vette for 30 minutes before taking it in. Could it be a leaking injector?
Thanks
Ike

GPM I think means Grams Per Minute...

And yes, on an 88, a leaky injector is probable. The Bosch injectors have a tendency to leak internally.

If the injectors haven't been replaced or rebuilt it's a good possibility they need to.

02 sensor question is which one?
A bad cat will fail the car.
You need a code read out, bad injector, bad 02 it will show up.

Not to depress you or anything, but I'm in the same boat. I've used up all my tries,(with a little help from 3 shops that couldn't fix it) so now I either have to sell the vette to someone who doesn't have to test, or throw it away.

That’s a nice offer. If I were in the same situation id take you up on it, and properly fix the car at my leisure.

Sounds like the perfect time to upgrade to the FMS 24lb injectors, and replace the cat if it’s still factory. 10 years is about the average life of a cat.

Assuming your BLM's are closed loop, an injector isn't leaking and with your CO well within limits, the Cat remains supsect. Make sure the air pump is working properly. Air should be going to the cat as soon it's warmed up and the easiest way to test it is to remove the hose to make sure air is blowing through it. If not, the solenoid may be bad; make sure the check valve is good too - should only be able to blow air through it towards the cat.

My 95 failed TX emission test. I got a bottle RXP from Auto Zone. Ran it though a full tank of gas, and it passed with flying colors. Might want to try it before you do major repair. It wont hurt anything, and it was a great $7.95 investment. Car is running great now. Just a thought.

You and Ductape need to get with Ron Kane at Kane Automotive in Springfield, IL. I am at work so do not have his card. IM me if you want and I will get it for you tomorrow. He is a Corvette wizard and can fix your problem!

Thanks Spankyellow! I might take you up on it, and as was said before, fix it at my leasure. Now I realize there are arguements both ways on the effects of a catalytic converter. Mine is gutted because it blew everything loose, some of it out the tailpipe! That was because it was running so rich. 3 shops have tried, and myself, and it's still rich. I'll put a converter on when all is said and done, if it's really necessary, but I've got other issues here to fix before. It, an '85, runs like a striped azz zebra! It's got new injectors, EGR, O2, plugs etc, charcol canister with new check/purge valve, computer, different MAF and throtle body, new TPS and IAC. It ran CO@ 46.70, 30.00 is standard.
HC@ 3.92, 2.00 is standard. Accordind to the field service test, it's running the proper fuel ratio and goes closed/open loop like it's suppose to. Now anyway. go figure

Sorry about hijacking your thread Red88Vette. If I were you, since you're so close, unlike me, I'd try that RXP stuff from AutoZone, be sure your air filter is clean and don't shut it off before they test. Keep your rpm's up at about 1500 to keep your converter hot, or so they tell me at the testing headquarters. Let us know!

Ductape, the offer is for real. I hate the idea that government red tape is keeping your car off the road. Email me or PM me and we can get together to do this.

You can't pass here with a bad (gutted) cat.
Put a cat on your car and then test, always do a pre-test thats a test with the connection to the DMV off.

Email him at service@kaneauto.com
Tell him that one of the students from his Bloomington Gold class recommended him.
