i took my car in to get the radiator checked out about a week ago. i leave the car in their lot and give the mechanic the keys. i come back 2 days later to pick it up, they say the radiator is fine, and they cleaned it out for me. he then proceeds to tell me that the battery died, so they had it towed to the address i gave them, which is my dads shop. i went over there to find the corvette with a 6inch crack in the body above the left tire, and the ground effects in the front crooked, scraped, and cracked. they say theyll pay for it, but my god people... this is a horrible experience. anyone know how much it will cost to fix all of this? will they be able to work on the ground effects, or have to replace it? i don't know where to get it if i need to replace it; it came with the car.
PS: The battery is fine, I just have been putting off getting a new starter for a few weeks.
My mechanic broke my oil dip stick and ordered a new one before I even got there to pick it up. He called the next day to say it was in and apoloigized for everything. I wish all mechanics were like that!
I never leave my Corvette at ANY shop.
If the car's there, I'm there.

This is the best advice. There is only one shop where I leave my Corvette unattended, which is a locally owned alignment shop that I've been using for ages. They are the only ones I trust.
If you do have to leave your car at a shop, do the following; MAKE the service advisor or shop foreman do a walkaround of the car with you prior to leaving it. Tell them that you want them to make a notation on the work order that states that the body and paint are perfect, or that only specific flaws exist. Same with interior (it would suck to get your car back with a ripped seat from some grease monkey with a screwdriver in his rear pocket).
BTW, reputable shops won't mind doing this. Other shops will either hate it or refuse to do it. Don't leave your car with anyone who isn't willing to take full responsibility for it's well-being while it's in their care and custody.
To be honest with you, there's a lot of jobs on my Corvette that I don't really feel like doing, but do them myself just because I shudder at the thought of leaving it somewhere. Other than my alignment shop, Southwest Corvette Center is the only shop I trust to take good care of my car.....and they have a sign on the wall that says "Good labor ain't cheap, and cheap labor ain't good"
