Default Tire size differences?

What is the difference between 285/40/17 and 275/40/17 ?

I currently have the 275's on all four 9.5" A-mold rims. What difference would the 285's make?

Its just a wider tire, more contact patch. The first number in any tire size is its width.

the 285 would also have a bigger diameter by 8mm (10mm x 40% x 2).

275 is the width in mm/ 40 means 40% of the width is your sidewall height/ 17 is the size of rim in inches

The 285 will be 10 mm wider ( or one centimeter) and a tiny bit taller, absolutely safe to upgrade to with no worries of clearances. I have them on all four corners of my Vette, fits the 9.5 inch rim with no worries. And you can rotate tires front to back, to wear them out evenly.
