Hey all! I just got my first 'Vette (Black '90 L98 Conv.) about 2 1/2 months ago and I already snapped my crank clean in two. I love my car, and I need to get her back on the road (but I probably won't be able to before winter comes). It was a daily driver my buddy brought up from Las Vegas for me. It's got about 126,000 miles on it. I'm debating if I should get this motor rebuilt, or find a whole new engine. Any advice for a first time owner in a jam?
Just go buy a long block from one of those magazine advertisements for like $700, and do the sawp yourself if your mechanically inclined. Thats the cheap and easy way out. If your crank is truly broken, your engine may not have many salvageable parts anyway.
Most "chain" part stores in the States offer re-manufactured short blocks starting around $900.00 for "your" application.
Add in core charges and shipping for about another $300-400. Being Canadian, you can probably figure another 30% more. These would be bone-stock 2 bolt main reconditioned motors. Adding performance parts and better warranties send the prices up quite a bit.
Just remember, you get what you pay for, whether it be used, rebuilt or crate. So I think what you're being quoted locally sounds about right.
