The General installed it as a passive restraint system, before air bags were developed and required.

The only replacement that I really like is the one that converts it into a glove box but has the stock breadbox look. I've only seen a pic of it on this Forum but there was no link to the mfg.

I am new to forum too. I recently purchase a 87 vert with 80,000 miles. I can't replace my breadbox because my wife thinks that there is a passanger side air bag in there.

The "bread box" was put in by GM because they were expecting an air bag requirement. When it wasn't required yet, they left the padded "air bag holder" in place.

Here's a couple, this kit sticks right to your existing besels and center consol pieces, except where the bread basket is. It comes with a flat piece to replace bread basket. Took me about 3 hours to install, only because I really took my time to make sure everything lined up just right. Overall, I was impressed with the quality, everything fit perfectly.

I put the flat panel in my 85 and I think it looks way better than that big crash pad thingy. The only complaint I had about the kit was that the flexy hose used to hook up to the duct work was "WHITE" , like dryer exhaust hose. It looked like crap thru the black vent & it took me a while to hunt down the right size in black.

If you are not sure what to replace the breadbox with check out this link. It is a small storage space behind the new cover that replaces the breadbox.

I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE WITH MY DASH AS STONECUTTER908 SO I DISPOSED OF THE MAD FLAT PANEL AND INSTALLED ONE FROM ECKLERS PART #A5072 WHICH HAS A STORAGE POCKET WHICH LOOKS ALOT BETTER THAN THE MID AMERICA FLAT PANEL.

thanks and I had no clue, but to the forum member letting his wife thinking that it is an airbag, what happens if the car is lost due to an accident and she doesn't see an airbag come out?

Just remember to keep the breadbox if you ever decide to sell...

...I'm not big on its looks, but it is original.
