My '89 has the original black carpet and it look like a@@. Has anyone tried to dye their carpet? if so, what product did you use and was it worth the trouble?
Hello,
I have a black 1986 with graphite/gray interior. The carpet had faded to a green color, and looked terrible. I took the cheap way out and sprayed the carpet with the interior dye carpet spray. I opted to take all of the carpet out, so that I did not get any overspay on other pieces and am glad that I did.
When it dried, it did leave it EXTREMELY STIFF. But it definitely looks better than the green color. I plan on buying a new carpet kit for my Christmas present this year, so I only have to endure it for a couple of months. Who knows, it may soften up by then, and I can use the $400 for other accessories.
If you run a stiff brush over the carpet after spraying the dye, but before it dries, it doesn't dry nearly as stiff. It helps color distribution also. Worth a try.
Believe it or not!! I used that fabric dye you can get at the market that comes in a box. I think it's called RIT? Anyway, I dyed a friend of mine's carpet from tan to a burgandy. It came out great and not stiff. I mixed it with some boiling water and just sprayed it on til it was saturated. I let it sit for a good half hour. I just rinsed it off with the hose and cold water and let it dry completely. A lot of the dye does rinse off with the hose but the color was fantastic. After it dried it wouldn't rub off. Just be careful where you rinse it off at.
It is my opinion that "carpet dye" in the spray cans is just thin paint. I've tried it and didn't care at all for the results. The price of "original carpeting" for Corvettes is simply outrageous. A neighbor of mine, took his 84 to an upholstery shop and they did a magnificent job for $200. Exactly how they "molded" the carpet, I have no idea, but the results were stunning. You might wander over to a couple of these places just to get an idea of what they would charge. BTW, this business (I've forgotten the name) does specialize in auto upholstery. It was done in black, so there was no problem with interior color matching. I've always been partial to black carpeting, for obvious reasons.
You can buy new carpet for about $350 from Wilcox. It is ACC and is pretty good stuff. Go to the Wicox site and give them a call: http://www.yankeelady.com/willcox/index.htm
I am very pleased with my new carpet and it will take you about 6 - 8 hours to install it.
