Default Breadbox Question

Has anyone removed the breadbox by just cutting off the face of it and removing it from the front? I'm not sure if you would have access to all of the screws this way.

If you dont mind cutting up the bread box, I dont see way it woluldnt work. I replaced mine when I had the dash pad out. If you do cut it, Be careful. There is a box mounted between the bread box and the dash, it has some wires hooked up to it. Dont know if its for the Bose or what. Good luck.

Rick, I hope you don't mind but for you guys who have been into that area I'd like to ask a copla questions.

Is the breadbox hollow or solid?
Is the area behind a solid panel or just a frame?
Does anyone still have the breadbox that they removed to install a flat panel?

I believe that 'box' you speak of is your ECM...
at least in my '85 that's the case...

I took mine out on my 86 to replace it with a flat panel..after I worked for hours I found that I could have just cut it out like you suggested...you only need to be careful it you want to save it...for what??? There was nothing behind mine but a few brackets....

Its not the ECM, I had that out when I replaced the heater core . Maybe my little box was an 85/84 only deal. I do still have the bread box. The pad on front is solid, but its kinda hollow on the inside( if I remember correctly). I'll take a look at it tonight. I've seen them on E-bay, cheap.

Thanks for the feedback.

I saved the pic of that guy who had converted his breadbox into a cool functional glove box, so it's useful yet looks very nearly stock.

Winter is comming soon and I need a low budget "winter project".

I believe the "box" behind the breadbox contains the "brains" for the stock stereo system.

In order to really appreciate a "bread box" you got to have a 84 to 89 model. This feature died with the 90 model year I think! It is the cushion mounted directly in front of the passenger so that when you test the brakes, (really hard) his head hits the cushion or bread box!
