Default Normal running temps...

Hey everybody..haven't been here in awhile..hope you all are doing well

I was wondering if I can get some replies from everybody about what temperature your vettes are running during cooler weather.

Mine seems to be running WARMER now that the temperature has cooled off than it did in the middle of summer!!

It was running in the summer around 213-215..now it's running 220-223.

Would love to hear everybody's input!!

Thanks Again!

Depends on the driving. Mine averages 200 when I am on the hwy, but in town with plenty of stops it likes to go into the high 220s and occasionaly touch 230 if my A/C is not on. Mine does run cooler in the cooler weather though....

Your temps seem pretty high unless they are what you see in city traffic. Neither my 92 or 87 will hit those temps unless it's a hot day and in heavy traffic. IF the temps are around 70-75 degrees, my 87 will run right around 180-185 (180 degree stat) and my 92 will run right around 197 to 200 (stock 195 stat).

One of the biggest problems in keeping a C4 runing cool is airflow through the radiator. It's very common to see the raidator and the A/C condensor clogged up with debris. Look up under the front behind the license plate and see what's there and you might get a suprise!!

You can use a garden hose to flush all of the junk from between the coils of the radiator and A/C condensor by aiming a stram of water from the cooling fan side. There is lots of space to get a nozzle in past the fans and wash the area.

You didn't say how long it's been since you have replaced the coolant, but it would not hurt to have a complete flush done and install new coolant. A lower thermostat may help for the summer months.

Also check the operation of the secondary cooling fan. With the engine at operating temps, turn the A/C on to a cooling temperature. The secondary fan should start. This is a good way of cooling the engine temps if they start to climb in heavy traffic. The secondary fan should come on at 228 or so if the A/C is off.

LT1's tend to run hotter, but they shouldn't be hitting 213º-215º. In normal driving they should run around 200º, in stop and go you can hit 230º with the AC off but it should go back down to 200º once you start moving.

Might be time to have it flushed...

Default To start with I would.....

First check for garbage (plastic bags, sand, paper and leaves) in front of the radiator and between the radiator and the condensor for the A/C. If that 2" space is clear, then do a full flush of the cooling system. Replace coolant with distilled water and Dexcool at a 50/50 mixture.

My 96 LT4 runs at 190 on the freeway, low 200s-21xs around town. Oil is usually in the low 200s as well, but I like to try and get it over 212 to boil out an contaminants that may be in there.... Your temps do sound too high.

Cleaning the radiotor, dropped my running temps almost 10 degrees...

My 96 LT1 consistantly averages 196 around town and on the highway unless I'm stuck in a drive thru or stand still traffic then it gradually creeps up until the fans kick on. I would check for debris in the radiator and try a flush if the coolant looks neglected.

I went on a 50 mile backroad trip yesterday and the temp stayed at 197. Ambient was about 78. When ambient gets mid-80's or above, it stays right around 200.

In town, 91 C or roughly 194-196 F Highway is about 81-83 C or 170-180.

Mods, 180 therm and Ron Davis radiator.

Right now my 96 runs about 195 to 197 on the highway and about 200 to 205 in normal traffic with A/C off. If I'm sitting at idle for an extended time the temperature will rise to about 228 when the fans kick in. With the A/C on my temperature will normally run right at 200 to 205 here in Las Vegas with the outside temperature running well over 100 degrees in the summer.

That's almost identical with mine.

I have a 96 LT1 and was watching the temp over the weekend. Mine was running consistently at 200-201 on the highway. Temp outside was 55-60.
